There are 4 main problems:

1. Entire economy changing rapidly.
2. Schools have major roadblocks in the hiring process.
3. Federal dollars are being allocated to school districts' but not enough for the demand of positions.
4. Increase in turnover. 

While the administration is telling teachers to put themselves first. The district and state are requiring more paperwork for teachers to complete. House Bill 4545 has put all English and Math Teachers documenting every month the progress of students who have failed STAAR the year prior. There are more training to be completed that have been added this year. Many schools have openings for teachers, custodial staff, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and substitutes. At our school, we are covering classes during our planning and conference period.

            Both Mr. Rodriguez and Ms. Hilliard have mentors to lead the way for them and give them advice on their time on teaching. Every year there are lows and mistakes that are made, but how you recover and fix them is what matters most. The relationship between the two new members to Pico School intertwines and are able to see how they lean on each other for support. 

            The authors wanted to use different lenses I believe to relate to anyone reading this book. If one has the book, it can be referred back to so they can reflect on old positions so one does not forget how it was as a teacher, but also once one gets into a leadership role can look back at the book to see different scenarios that worked well for the Pico School. The novel had great ideas on meetings, conversation skills, and leadership/classroom techniques to bring into the role oneself is in.
