He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 11, 1922 and  witnessed the bombing of Dresden, Germany, which influenced his novel,  Slaughterhouse-Five. He became a prisoner of war in Dresden after he fought at the Battle of the Bulge in Europe.
