Is Mathematical Literacy a subject of substance?

As an aspiring Mathematical Literacy teacher, I am often faced with the thought of whether Mathematical Literacy is a subject of substance in today’s world. Many times, students at school often feel that Mathematical Literacy is not really a subject of importance if compared to pure Mathematics. Although Mathematical Literacy does serve as an alternative to pure Mathematics, it does not have any less importance. If we look at Mathematical Literacy we can see that most topics covered in this subject can at most times be applied much more realistically than pure Mathematics? One could say that finding out how many tiles would be needed to cover a certain floor space is much more realistic than finding the tan or cos of a certain equation. This is merely one example to compare, however this does not mean that I consider Mathematical Literacy the better option. At the end of the day my desire would be that every student doing Mathematical Literacy does not feel that it is a mediocre subject, but a subject of relevance, importance and can be meaningful when applied to the real world.
