On this day, Mr. Bowtie Lorax joined me in completing an Owl Pellet dissection assignment during Ms. Orilio's period 4 APES class. He is pictured here uncomfortably holding onto a rats skull while surrounded by various other bones. Together, we were able to able to calculate the amount of biomass needed at lower trophic levels to support these owls. During this week, we learned about food webs and ecological pyramids and these subjects interact well with the topic of feeding the world. Mr. Bowtie Lorax learned of the process of ecological efficiency, and how only about ten percent of the energy from organic matter is stored as flesh while remaining is lost during transfer, broken down in respiration, or lost to incomplete digestion by higher trophic level.

2. Tree Trunk Lorax Q1

Soon after Hurricane Irma hit, Mr. Bowtie Lorax joined me on a walk to observe the destruction the winds had done. We stumbled upon one of my favorite trees that had been presumably uprooted and the rest of it was now gone. This was just one of the few trees that had to be cut down after Hurricane Irma devastated their roots and trunks. This refers to the topic of natural disasters because much if not all, of the environment is always impacted by these occurring natural disasters. Humans are then called upon to adjust to these wreckages by taking the correct procedure in hurricane clean-ups, ensuring they are not damaging the environment furthermore.

4. Wetland Restoration Lorax Q2

Just before sunset, Mr. Bowtie wanted to get a quick view of the Florida Everglades from Atlantic Boulevard. The restoration of this very famous wetland has increased exponentially since the 1940s where it was one of many wetlands that was drained for agriculture, development and flood control. The South Florida Water Management District has been buying this land since 2002 to try and restore the land and its water quality. They are responsible for flood control, wetland protection and water quality. The districts principal district engineer Damon Meier's claims the restoration is a slow process but it has greatly improved along with the quality of the water. This Wetland Restoration is important because these wetlands are responsible for the water quality, they provide fish and wildlife habitats, store floodwaters and maintain surface water flow during dry periods.

3. Water Pollution Lorax Q2

Mr. Bowtie Lorax joined me on a quick stroll as we both stumbled upon a nearby canal. At the rims of the canal, we both saw many polluted items such as trash bags, plastic bottles and containers placed there by the public visitors. This topic of water pollution is very common today on Earth. Humans are negatively impacting Earth's land and it's water's at a very alarming rate, leading to many detrimental effects harming both animals and humans. For humans this pollution can lead to many kinds of health effects due to chemicals and bacteria in water pollution, pesticides from soil contamination, and even nerve damage from air pollution. Instead of working to conserve our waters, humans are contaminating them and facing the effects for what they have caused.
