There are no subspecies of frilled shark. There are two distinct separate species. The commonly known frilled shark and the Southern African frilled shark. They are both deep sea creatures and have similar appearances with variations in their anatomy. The two species can be a bit difficult to tell apart but the African frilled shark is smaller. The size of its head and width of its mouth also differs from that of the more commonly known frilled shark. It's also cuter in my opnion.

The frilled shark is a pre historic animal. It dates back to 80 million years. It is considered a living fossil because it remains relatively unchanged. The frilled shark has completely adapted to living in it's deep sea environment without much competition.

Some interesting thing to note about the frilled shark is that because of its eel like body it swims in a snake like fashion. Its teeth are quite different from what you would expect to see on a shark. They have rows of small curved needle like teeth. Despite them being known as living fossils they aren't believed to have very long life spans. There estimated life span is thought to be a few decades. Their name comes from the six gill slits on their throat.

I picked the frilled shark because I have a fascination with sharks and deep sea creatures. It's not a very well known shark. Not a lot being known about it makes more intriguing, makes it seem mysterious The other shark i thought about picking scares me a little and I didn't want to have to look at pictures of it to be honest. If you're curious to see the other shrak it's called a Bigeye Thresher or Alopias superciliosus.
