In a Grade 11 class I was in, there was a student who always took on the leadership role and would control the entire group. I have tried to divide the work equally and ask students which tasks they would like to take on, but every time they work away from class or without a teacher around, she starts bossing them again to the point no one wants to work with her anymore. I have tried assigning 'duties' to the members so they knew what to be responsible for, but again, didn't seem to work. Any suggestions should situations like this arise?

Self-management skills might be a bit challenging - dealing with self-motivation and resilience can be difficult - as teachers we never seem to do quite the right thing to please the students...lol These students live in a world where they expect instant gratification and remaining focused and persevering can also be issues. How can we better develop this skill in our students?

Some questions that have emerged for me in my initial thinking on ATLs:
1. What role can mindfulness play in supporting students' own understandings of themselves as effective self-managers in their learning?
2. How can schools and teachers cultivate consistent, meaningful and impactful use of higher order thinking skills within their lessons in such a way that students become more fluent in their understandings of their own personal approaches to learning?
3. How might wellbeing lessons generate helpful thinking on the importance of communication skills not just in learning but within learning cultures and communities of practice?

I recently faced a challenge in guiding DP 2 (grade 12) students at achieving a balance between core subjects reports; internal assessments; CAS; wrapping up their high school years. At the same time, the nature of tasks Language A Lang. and Lit. require critical thinking, organization and reflection skills in the form of critical, creative responses. I came to find that 'Resilience', under 'Affective skills', is the source of their complaints and troubles with time management. What students needed was a teaching strategy, linked to any part of the course I'm teaching, to help change perspectives. So instead of focusing on the challenges, we managed to highlight the skills they are applying, gaining and practicing constantly.

Activity:

Research, select and analyse a text (fiction or non-fiction) that explores the concept/illustration of resilience and compare it to a multimedia text (video/documentary/film) according to The Big 5 analysis components.

Post-Activity discussion:

Students could note down, in mind maps, the skills they have gained in studying three subjects of the two-year DP , and how that is an achievement of its own before submissions, deadline or external assessments.
Feedback on responses:
The analysis was thorough, personal but critical, and self-reflective. Although they analysed texts that are unrelated to the case of time managing their subjects, they were very persuaded by the effectiveness of being a resilient learner, or exploring the perspective of one.

Rania

I find it challenging to discuss time management skills to a large group of students (each DP yeargroup is 120+ students) because the notion of time, and our control of time, is so different from one culture to another... e.g. some students need to be advised on taking breaks only once they have done some work... when some students needs to be advised on taking breaks... yet some parents/guardians will advise the opposite of what I would advise. I remember in my previous school I used to say to my students that they should plan to sleep 8 hours and my colleague used to tell them that sleeping more than 6 hours during school time meant that you were lazy. When it comes to time management , students can get conflictual advice
