I think that Curley's wife is really hard done by. Her problems are the consequence of her situation on the ranch. How would you feel if you were in her situation?

I think the most fascinating theme explored in this novel is that of power. The different types of power; who is powerful and who isn't; who abuses their power and who doesn't; how people cope when they have little power over their own lives. If the ranch in this novel is a microcosm of 1930's America, what would today's 'ranch' look like?

I agree with Miss Hallam. I also find it interesting that the novella explores dreams and their impact on the characters. I love the fact that they have bought into The American Dream but have no chance of achieving it The American Dream because the idea is ridiculous in reality (espeically during the Great Depression!)

Yes but it is very hard to sympathise with her when she threatens to get Crooks lynched for no reason.

She even calls him a "nigger" to his face.

Maybe Steinbeck is trying to show us how those at the bottom of the heap always turn on one another?

I Think Crooks is worse off than Lennie. Lennie is not really aware of what is happening. Crooks knows he is being treated badly. Ignorance is bliss.

I think Crooks is far worse off than Lennie. Even though he is undeniably isolated, at least he is accepted to some degree by his fellow men. Crooks is utterly alone and he knows it.
