The BBFC has issued this film as a 18 and over. The title of the film stands out which is in the middle of the cover. Above the title you can see the credited director and also the actor. The Director's name (Shane Meadows) is a lot smaller than the actors (Paddy Considine) because the director is not well known as the actor is. Paddy Considine is the only credited actor on the front because is the rising star and his name is used to attract audience to watch the movie. Also on the front cover of the DVD you can see one of it's distributors in the bottom corner which is optimum releasing.

Just by looking at the front cover you can suggest that this film is a horror movie or even a thriller. The colour of the DVD cover shows that there will be death involved which could even relate the movie to being a slasher film. The silhouette of the man holding an axe which you can relate to the classic horror film Friday the 13th where there is a silhouette of a man holding a lethal weapon. Also the red background colour signifies danger, death and a lot of blood. The images on the back cover could also lead the audience to believing this is a horror because of the images that are represented such as the man in the mask and also a dead man laying on the floor with writing on the wall saying "one down" shows that there will be a number of murders.

The gender this would be targeting is mostly men. The reason for this is because the characters in the movie are mostly men with only two women making brief appearances. The ethnicity this movie would be targeted towards are mainly Caucasian people as the actors are mainly caucasian and there isn't any other race in the whole movie. The movie would target audience members who believe in dark justice or people who don't trust the police to deal with the matter.

The writing of the quotation is hard to miss as the Keywords would be written in a much larger font to attract the buyer. On one of the Quotations it references to a famous Martin scorsese 'Taxi Driver' and Ted Kotcheff movie 'First Blood'. It describes the movie as the mixture of the two successful movies and and ends the quote by saying the movie is 'Brilliant'. The ratings are also under the quotation reviews and none of the ratings are below 4 stars which shows the audience that this film is really enjoyable and great to watch.

The title itself can signify that this movie is a horror because it shows the word Dead in red which shows someone has been wrongfully killed and someone is after revenge. The title also shows that there will be killings of only men in this movie. the silhouette of the mysterious man holding an axe shows that there will be disturbing types deaths and also psychopathic behaviour. The images on the back show the killer is masked so this could suggest the film could be a thriller because we don't know who the killer is until the mask is taken off which could surprise the audience. There is a enigma code for the audience by the use of the word shoes, this means the killer wants the men to feel responsible for the death of his brother so he wants to put them in the shoes of his brother so they can feel the torture and pain his brother felt.

The opening weekend numbers for this were least significant only bringing in a total of of £1,825 in the USA. The reason for this poor result was due to its poor advertising and misleading advert which wouldn't be interesting to Americans. Another reason for the poor result is also the lack of screen time it could obtain with the USA only showing One screening. This did continue onto other weekend with the Movie then getting an extra screen the week after but managed to do slightly worse than the opening weekend. The movie was mainly played at festivals than at locals cinemas. Altogether it received a total of £184,000 worldwide. It made less than what it started with. Although the official release date for the movie was the 1st of October 2004, it was really released worldwide until two years later from its initial release. Another reason for its financial fail is because it has no mainstream actors to attract.

Opening Weekend

$1,825 (USA) (14 May 2006) (1 Screen)

Gross

$6,013 (USA) (28 May 2006) (sub-total)
$4,048 (USA) (21 May 2006)
$1,825 (USA) (14 May 2006)

Weekend Gross

$1,125 (USA) (28 May 2006)
$1,039 (USA) (21 May 2006) (2 Screens)
$1,825 (USA) (14 May 2006) (1 Screen)

One bad review could effect the movie because it takes at least one audience member away from the movie. This Movie mostly received positive reviews making the movie highly anticipated and a must watch movie. The effects of the movie review are powerful because reading reviews can persuade others to watch the movie. It can gather a lot more viewings of the movies.

Total film magazine also ranked it in 12th position for the best movie the magazines lifetime. They received many media attention with Shane Meadows and Tony Kebells (Anthony) going on the BBC Nottingham radio to have a interview about the film just before its release which was on the same day.The movie was nominated for various awards but only managed to win 2 which was the 'Directors Guild of Great Britain' and 'Dinard british festival', with the another two individual awards won by the star man Paddy Considine. Due to the movie being set a very low budget it couldn't really advertise on billboards so they had to settle for more cheaper options such as creating websites and doing interviews.

They're Many different genre convention that you can spot from the trailer such as Horror, Crime and Thriller etc. The trailer is very misleading and genre isn't very clear because there is Horror music playing whilst the narrating is on and then it shows quick jump cuts where you can see a man with a mask and grown men panicking and shouting. It then becomes more clear because it tells us who the main killer could possibly be and then it switches to him apologising. The star of this film is Paddy Considine and we can see and hear him from the start. The director isn't mentioned in the trailer because the audience wouldn't be familiar with his work so to entice the audience the Use the star Paddy Considine in most shots and Narrating so that the audience know that he is the main character. The soundtrack that is being played over the voice over makes the film sound like its about revenge as well as giving the hint that it is a horror, the closing music played could also deter the audience from believing that it is a horror but instead a crime/action movie. The trailer also doesn't reveal it's unique selling point because it is a enigma. This film doesn't offer anything different to other british films because it shows the camera techniques that any other independent british films would use.

Paddy Considine - Richard

Richard is represented as a psychopathic vigilante who is on a mission. He is presented in a positive way because he out to seek revenge for his brother who was led to commit suicide. He’s an ex-soldier, who went away to fight for his country and whilst he was away his little brother was mentally and sexually abused by by a group of drug dealers. With him being a ex-soldier he does use his training and expertise to his advantage when it comes to picking the guys out. He is stereo-typed in a way because normally men/women are left distressed or discombobulated when they are discharged from the army. So that could reflect Richards behaviour because he still sees his brother even when he isn’t there. You can apply the hypodermic needle theory to this character because if you were just a passive viewer then everything that Richard had done to men would be justifiable and wouldn't think he was insane, whereas a person with a negotiated opinion would think that he was crazy and that he couldn't possibly killed all the men and got away with it.

Sonny is the leader of the group and is also their boss. He is seen as the Alpha-male of this movie and nothing happens without his knowledge or permission. He is presented in a very negative way because he seen as a heavy drinker and he also sells drugs. He has no emotions towards anyone, we know this because of the way he treats people who have special needs (Anthony). There is some sort of stereo-typing because most leaders are confident and also the strongest amongst their group and facially look more dominant than the others.

The situation is that Richard had come back from the army and is in the pub having a drink. Herbie then walks into the same pub and Richard begins to stare at Herbie until he gets a reaction from himand then begins to verbally abuse Herbie in the pub. That’s where the conflicts begins because he sees Herbie drug dealing in the pub. Richard then comes up with a resolution to kill all the men who were involved with Anthony’s death. Richard successfully kills all the men but leaves one and tells him to kill him (Richard) leaving the last man with blood on his hands. I don’t agree with the resolution because I feel it could have been handled in a better way where they both stay alive. They way I would of liked the film to end is that Richard confronts the last man and tells him that his old friends are dead and he then leaves the town never to be seen again. The ending is very closed because Richard had been killed. The enigma does exist in this movie for example, why Richard went to the army leaving his brother behind and also why has he come back. One of the reasons he did he leave his brother behind is because he was embarrassed by him and felt he would just hold him back

This theory explains how the audience can be easily influenced by what they are viewing. This suggests that the film could be injecting messages into our brains without our knowledge. In this film (Dead Man Shoes) the director could be injecting negative messages into the audience brains by telling the viewers that the only way you can get revenge is to kill the people who have affected you. Passive audience will watch the film and not question it and look into the movie properly. The theory does make the audience desensitize with what they watch. if the audience are easily influenced they would go out of their way and got revenge to people who done them wrong.

In the text the only people who are marginalised are the women. They treated as if they are worth nothing. For example in the film when the men are trying to find clues to why Richard is after (or how he keeps finding them) them, they go to Patti's house, forcibly enter her house and whilst sonny is chocking her the other men storm into her home. Although she had left that life behind her you can see that the decision she made in past has come back because she gets given no respect at all from the men. But the other woman that were introduced to later in the movie is treated with a lot more respect and this could be based on her early life decisions not to hang around bad people. Jo is treated with a lot more respect hence she has two young children and a husband

Richard is staring at Herbie while he is drug-dealing in the pub. At this point the audience knows that Herbie is a negative character because when he enters Anthony hides his face, so this suggests that Herbie is a bad guy and all Richard is doing sticking up for Anthony, then again the audience could think that Richard has a mental problem because the way he lashes out at Herbie for no reason. This is the opening scene so the audience is yet to figure out that Anthony isn't there and is in fact dead so this does show Richard to being a bit crazy.

This film has affected the way I judge people who take revenge. I feel that Justice should have been served the right and lawful way. They way Richard went about getting his revenge was way to far. Although the men who led Richard’s brother to death and were very evil people themselves, no one deserves to die at any means and everyone deserves to be forgiven. In this film the men are genuinely scared of what is going to happen and look like they learned there lesson, that’s what I think should have been the end of it but Richard does decide to kill them all. In this case I think Richard could pf handled it much better and in way it where it didn’t have to cost the life of other people and also himself.

The uses and gratifications theory is about the audiences understanding and how and why they seek specific media to satisfy their specific needs The theory focuses on the audiences instead of the product, this means that the theory is looking to see what people do with media and not what media does to people. When this theory is in use the audience wouldn’t be a passive spectator but would take on more of an active role and will begin to interpret and integrate the media into their own lives..In dead man shoes, the audience can relate in many ways than one, for example, people who have unfortunately lost love ones to murder/suicide because of someone else, Ideally they would want revenge for the person responsible. Also audience members could watch the film and connect with Richard more because Ex-soldiers when they do return home they come back to no family and come back to a home where they are just by themselves and left lonely. Furthermore audience can even relate to the drug dealers and agree with it because they could class that as work .

Just from the title alone you know that there is a man that is killed whereas the title “About a Girl” could suggest that the main target audience are for females. The audience would be very different because 'Dead Man's Shoes' is about cold revenge whereas 'About a Girl' is about a young girl who had no help which left her to make a poor choice.
Director - Brian Percival
BBFC Certificate - 15
Running Time - 9 Mins
Release - 25 August 2001
Genre - Drama
Box Office - 0
Budget - £33,000
