- They don't believe in elektricitet and technology.

- They are really religious and believe in God.

- The men have a beard - NOT a moustache.

- The men often wear a hat.

- Often work as farmers.

- Women spend a lot of time in the kitchen - making the food.

- Rides horses - NOT cars.

- Gets many children.

- They are helpfull.

- Talks German at home.

- They call all non-Amish people an English.

- Believe that the only change to come in heaven is to follow all the rules of the Amish church.

Amish or ”normal”?

Once in their live, when they become teenagers, they have a choice to leave the Amish people, and do what they want to for a period. Within that period, they have to decide if they want to stay Amish or become normal - an English. If they choose to become normal, their family won't talk or contact them ever again.

About 300 years ago Germans and Swiss protestants arrived in North America to escape religious persecution - forfølgelse.

They haven't change since then, but the world has.

When the Amish first arrived, they'd all lived by one set of rules based on the bible, but over the years people started to disagree about the best way to live a true Amish life. Therefore different groups invented their own rules. Ex. how they should dress up.
