This Number Day, we’re taking inspiration from a rather chilly mathematical adventure. Imagine receiving a penguin every single day for a year — how would you organise them? How would you count them, group them, or even make space for them all? Like the growing collection in 365 Penguins, Number Day invites us to explore numbers in fun, creative, and sometimes surprising ways. From spotting patterns and solving puzzles to tackling real-life maths challenges, it’s a chance to discover that numbers are everywhere — and that learning maths can be just as exciting as opening the door to find a new penguin waiting outside!

Today we practised and reviewed different maths skills and linked it to the book of 365 penguins.

Activity 1: use tens and ones to partition 2 digit numbers

Activity 2: use the numicon to support doubling facts

Activity 3: collect data and create a bar chart

Activity 4: 1:1 counting correspondence

Activity 5: identify the 2 factors and calculate the product. Skip count in 2s, 5s and 10s

6/02- Today we have been celebrating Number Day! We looked at the story 365 Penguins and decided to create a game based upon the book. Our criteria for the game was to include penguins, numbers and for it to be at least a two-player game. We can’t wait to show you our final products!

Maths Champions

The EEF Maths Champions from NDNA are early years educators dedicated to strengthening maths teaching and learning across nursery settings. As part of the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) initiative delivered in partnership with the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA), Maths Champions support their teams to build confidence, knowledge, and practical strategies for embedding high-quality maths into everyday practice.

Through professional development, collaborative reflection, and evidence-informed approaches, EEF Maths Champions help create rich mathematical environments where children explore number, pattern, shape, and problem-solving through play. Their role is central to improving outcomes, ensuring that young children develop strong foundations in maths that support future learning and success.
