Mary S. Language Tool: Kahoot

When I was a student teacher, my mentor used Kahoot and my ML colleagues at my school all recommended it. I've used it to teach concepts, to review content and vocabulary, and to learn about the United States (such geography and state capitals). It's a game platform but the ability to combine text and images helps students understand meaning, such as with prepositions (the item is on, under, above, the box, for example). Even older students enjoy playing a game and competing against others in class. You can also assign Kahoots for individual practice and review. [I've had colleagues use those for extra credit/bonus points). There are many educator-made Kahoots shared for free on the platform. I pay for a subscription so I can create custom Kahoots with images. I haven't used it enough this semester because of my learning a new curriculum. However, I plan to be more intentional with this for next year.

Quizlet is a platform that allows students to learn and review new vocabulary, offering different activities including Flashcards, Learn, Test, Match, Classic Live and Checkpoint. I usually make flashcards for the new vocabulary of each lesson in advance, requiring students to complete "Learn" before the class; as a check and review, I will arrange three rounds of "Classic Live" in the class, randomly grouped. Students are not allowed to leave their seats and can only communicate in Chinese and cooperate to compete with other groups. My students enjoyed this activity very much. If students complete their class work early, they will love to try to set a new "Match" record. The flashcards I make usually don't have English explanations. One side has Chinese characters, and the other side has pinyin plus pictures.

We started using Pear Deck more often in the Math3 classroom! To preface, I co-teach in math. We go pretty quickly through the content in Math3, and sometimes with the room layout, the board is hard to see. Pear Deck allows students to look at the slide we're on on their own Chromebook and make notes or write the answers/draw lines. It has also allowed us to look at students' works and provide immediate feedback. Also, if students need it, they can use Google Translate that's on their Chromebooks.

This is school is a website that has different activities for students. Among the activities it has short videos explaining in 2 minutes information about grammar. Also, include videos for general information, for example: Do you prefer Apple or Android? It also has activities to practice vocabulary. This website I integrated with Quizlet, where we focus on practicing grammar and vocabulary. Regarding my favorite platform or website is Duolingo. Also Rosetta Stone, both help me to practice and understand the English language.

I like to use Gimkit. Gimkit is a game show for the classroom that requires knowledge, collaboration, and strategy to win. When we have new lesson for practice, it allows me input audio to practice learning as well as writings, and students have fun while learning.

Edpuzzle is a great tool that I used to reinforce my lessons as sometimes students might not fully understand the lesson and by watching a video that explains the main topic in Edpuzzle helps them to understand the main content of the lesson, I also like this application because I can grade assignments that I assign to my students here.

I enjoy using Quizizz with my students because it's a wonderful tool that I can use in class with students, or that I can assign them on their own. It is similar to Quizlet, Gimkit, and Blooket, but I think it focuses on the vocabulary and content a little more, while still acting a little "gamified." I like that I can see student's progress, and my favorite mode is the "mountain climbing" because it allows students to see their continual progress, and hit benchmarks, so that they feel successful. It reinforces for students that they can have fun learning, and that they can visually see what they know, and what they still need to work on! It's great for my ML students, because they understand it, and it allows them to practice without feeling discouraged.

Duolingo for Schools leverages the Duolingo app and website to make it easy for teachers to assign enrichment exercises. My students set up a Duolingo account at the beginning of the year. Students can then start at the level they test to or feel comfortable at, and then I can push XP-based assignments out to students when they have free time. XP-based assignments are part of the gamified Duolingo system. If a student finishes an assignment early or down time after a quiz or test, they can use that time to work through some brief translation and vocabulary exercises on Duolingo. Using Duolingo for Schools, I can easily track students' progress and it automatically creates an XP leaderboard that refreshes each week!

I love using ReadWorks with my students. I am able to assign reading assignments based on individual skill levels. Many reading passages have quizzes and reading comprehension questions already built in. The passages are diverse and include different cultures and current events. There are also ELL passages that focus on vocabulary and building background. Vocabulary definitions include home language translations as well. Readworks is a great way to keep up with student progress because it allows you to grade their work.

I used a lot Kahoot & islcollective when I worked in Spain. Since Mary S. already provided a link for Kahoot, I'm sharing a link to islcollective website. What I like about this technology tool is that I can assign video lessons with a unique link to different students (or a class). I can choose printed sheets or videos for any proficiency levels using keywords or topics that we would study. Kahoot is simply irreplaceable. Students of all ages love Kahoot. I used it primarily for vocabulary and verb tenses reviews, and a few times to rewards students after a successful class. For exaple, in Spain, kids liked to guess flags of each country. We practiced pronouncing countries' names.

Book Creator is a great tool for both teachers and students. Its features allow teachers boost access to the core curriculum while incorporating a variety of amplifications to support language. The application allows users to capture language across all 4 domains: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. I have used this for the creation of student portfolios where I can track progress and provide feedback.

In the summer of 2021, I taught in the Winston-Salem State University Startalk Program. Due to the pandemic, this program was primarily conducted online, with approximately 90% of the activities taking place virtually. We utilized various online tools, with Jamboard being the most frequently used in the novice class. It proved to be highly beneficial for assessing students' comprehension. The program's theme centered around travel and food. We incorporated a map of China into Jamboard, assigning each student an individual slide to work on. They were tasked with dragging images and descriptions of food to the locations in China corresponding to their places of origin.

It's not meant to take the place of your normal English class. Instead, it helps you understand and use what you learn in school better.
