When Tolentino was first introduced to the internet, she absolutely loved it. It looked like she found a sense of community on the internet. She was able to find people with the same interests as her very easily and see something new and interesting everyday. Tolentino also put the internet to good use as her friend, Emma and Tolentino would go on to start a blog called The Hairpin on which they would do daily posts.

Tolentino says that she didn’t want to make the mistake of letting her nostalgia with the internet hinder her thoughts about how the internet is now. She basically argues that the internet was originally about the simple pleasures of making friends with people of common interest but at a. certain age she feels like she is just having people look at her until the end of time and that it was a driver of every social interaction on the internet

Favreau feels like being on the internet all the time is an exhausting task, whereas in the beginning it was more fun.
He also brings up a point about how people are performing an identity for the public on the internet all the time and how that can change a person.

Tolentino suggests that the internet focuses more on the representation of the the material rather than the subject itself which often times leads to people prioritising external factors like diversity in media rather than the real issues like economic empowerment

A big reason why Tolentino stopped liking the internet was a tweet that was about how a father wrestled an alligator to save his child. The tweet contained some unnecessary harsh words and hate towards someone who just went through a tough life experience. Such unhinged behaviour made Tolentino realise that the internet was just a bad place and it prevented her from thinking that the internet was good for another 6 months or so.

Favreau questions himself about engagements. He suggests that there is no point of engaging with the internet as it doesn’t fix anything at all. Even if he knows more about a certain subject, it doesn’t change anything at all.
