• Part of our personality that dictates conscience
• Guilt vs. Remorse
  • Both are strongly connected to superego
  • Remorse can only occur after an indecent act has been committed
  • Guilt can occur after the thought of committing an indecent act

"Good" vs. "Bad"

• Who decides what is good and what is bad?
• Can only be determined after a civilization has been formed (i.e. we are not born knowing right from wrong)
  • First step to forming a society is when the power shifts from the individual to the community
• Collective decisions are made regarding what is acceptable

Sublimation

• Replacing "bad" thoughts with "good" actions
  • Sexual pervert turning to art
  • Violent male becoming a football player
  • Individual obsessed with death becomes a mortician
• Assumes that everyone has the talent or ability to redirect their fantasies

Suffering

• 3 Dimensions of Suffering
  • Deterioration of the body
  • External World
  • Relations with others
• Because everyone experiences some type of suffering, everyone has indecent thoughts whether they act on them or not
