Hello My Name Is Paul Smith (Exhibition)

As a design aspect, the Paul Smith exhibition was useful to visit due to the knowledge of how a designer may become mainstream, showing a workshop full of inspirations and essentially clutter, but its cutter that has useful traits. The exhibition showed various design aspects from the designer such as the classic Paul Smith inspired mini, and branded bottles of water and HP sauce. Although I may of thought the exhibition was very colourful it was also powerful beginning with insertion moving in to workspace and following that is design work worn by many celebrities, and to finnish was a viewing of Paul Smith's Pairs fashion week runway collection of 2008. My personal preference is more based around the interior insertional aspect of the exhibition and that is where the ideas start.

Design Museum Collection: Extraordinary Stories About Ordinary Things.

Whilst I was at the Design Museum mainly to view Paul Smith's collection, it came in very useful due to also the visit of this event showcasing such things as the magnificent stories behind the iconic traffic light stories that you would generally see from an artist influence. The things that caught my eye during my visit is shown in the imagery with designs like the classic red telephone box not really seen often any longer showing structure, patriotism and colour. Also another item is the 1920's Ladies hat which is nowadays transformed in to a hat known as the Trilby. The exhibition also showcased a series of interiors looking in to what the style of the given area was then known to be the kitsch of the time.

David Hockney Early Reflections.

Although no photography where aloud to be taken during the exhibition, it was very useful going to such an event due to reflection of a very eel known artist.

David found a mixture to involve type in collaboration of his portraits, prints & paintings using evolving quotes something such as in his work he see's water as a colour that being the key point to his influence in much of his work. He also uses his life experiences of homosexuality releasing imagery (mainly illustration and prints) in the early 1960's when such thing was a taboo subject one piece of artwork standing out 'We two boys together clinging'.

David Hockney is seen as a style icon, with being a artist his clothing influences many due to his wild insight in to individualism.

Christian Boltanski

In his installations and mixed-media works, the French artist Christian Boltanski uses photography and found objects to question memory and individuality. An awareness of mortality, and of the general tenuousness of human existence, haunts his art.

His earliest works, mostly films and photographs in a documentary style, focused on remembrances of his own childhood and cleverly mixed fictional characters in with real ones. During the 1980s, he became famous for projects that used portrait photographs of Jewish schoolchildren and piles of worn clothing to evoke the death camps of the Holocaust. His monumental installation No Man's Land, in which 30 tons of discarded clothing were sifted by a giant mechanical claw and accompanied by the sound of recorded human heartbeats, was installed in 2010 at the Park Avenue Armory.

Boltanski has had solo exhibitions at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, the Centre Georges Pompidou Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. In 2011 he represented France at the Venice Biennale, and his work has been included in three editions of the Documenta exhibition in Kassel.

Anglo-Canadian painter. After a period as a student at the Université de Paris-Sorbonne (1977–8), she settled in London and studied art at St Martin's School of Art (1978–9) and Goldsmiths College, University of London (1979–82). Her first solo exhibition, in 1984, was of small still-life paintings depicting common objects, either singly or in sets. These were technically remarkable works. Her subsequent series of paintings of objects in groups (rows, clusters, layers or grids) borrowed the language of hardware catalogues, shop display windows and formal arrangements in art and photography, while yet creating autonomous visual statements. Sometimes her arrangement of objects was influenced by their functional identity, so that, for example, stamps become islands for the eyes to travel between or wheels speed forward at an unstoppable visual pace. Later works continued to emphasise the arrangement of objects in relation to the picture plane, and in such works as Plates (1992; London, Nicola Jacobs and Tony Schlesinger priv. col.), in which four blocks of plates are presented in rows of four, six, three and five against a plain mid-grey background, an element of time was also introduced by giving the view of each block from a different height. Other works from the 1990s include landscapes, cityscapes and crowds. Crowd (1992; e.g. London, Nicola Jacobs and Tony Schlesinger priv. col.) demonstrates the artist's continued interest in the technical aspect of the painting process, with strokes, dabs, dashes, dots, planes of colour and other painterly marks layering the surface. Richard Hamilton

Hamilton was born in London. He was educated at the Royal Academy Schools from 1938 to 1940, then studied engineering draughtsmanship at a Government Training Centre in 1940, then worked as a 'jig and tool' designer. He returned in 1946 to the Royal Academy Schools, from which he was expelled for 'not profiting from the instruction being given in the painting school' (Hamilton, p.10), then attended the Slade School of Art from 1948 to 1951.

An exhibition of his engravings was held at Gimpel Fils, London, in 1950. These were inspired by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson's 1913 text On Growth and Form which had been republished in 1942 and was a seminal influence on Hamilton's early work. Hamilton devised and designed the exhibitions Growth and Form at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1951, and Man, Machine and Motion at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1955. He exhibited at the Hanover Gallery in 1955, and participated in This is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1956, for which he produced a collage entitled Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing? for the poster and catalogue. With Victor Pasmore in 1957 he devised and organised an Exhibit, at the Hatton Gallery and the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Hamilton was a member of the Independent Group, formed in the 1950s by a group of artists and writers at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, whose symposiums contributed to the development of Pop art in Britain. He was one of the prime practitioners of the critic Lawrence Alloway's theory of a 'fine/pop art continuum'. Hamilton interpreted this as meaning that 'all art is equal - there was no hierarchy of value. Elvis was to one side of a long line while Picasso was strung out on the other side ... TV is neither less nor more legitimate an influence than, for example, is New York Abstract Expressionism' (Hamilton, p.31).

Hamilton taught at the London Central School of Arts and Crafts and University of Newcastle upon Tyne; he gave up teaching full-time in 1966. He designed a typographic version of Duchamp's Green Box, published in 1960. Keen to embrace certain types of technology within his art, Hamilton began creating computer-generated works in the 1980s. He has had a long career as a print-maker, and in 1983 won the World Print Council Award. In 1991 he married the artist Rita Donagh. Retrospective exhibitions of Hamilton's work have been held at the Hanover Gallery, 1964, the Tate Gallery, 1970 and 1992, and abroad. He was Britain's representative at the 1993 Venice Biennale.

Based in Tate Liverpool on the Albert Dock A place known for once being the port to Briton. This location holds heritage and brilliant historic architectural design.

After finding a little article in stylist magazine about the event and then visiting this exhibition, I realised 70’s has made its way back to influence once again; the new iconic era of style. This exhibition was very influential in to my final ideas for my Final Creative Project based on Trend Forecasting, mixing the old with the new would be a great concept. With me being a 90’s child I had a lot to learn about the 70’s from speaking to people finding out that a lot actually happened in that era; but it was until now over shadowed by the 60’s and 80’s but this was the era music changed and and evolved and recognising stereotypes who liked what. The outcome of visiting this event opened my eyes to the possibility of future trends plus having the benefit of past 70’s era as inspiration.

Pure London was open to students and also of course buyers when registering online, the event itself is usually mainly for buyers an insight to the next seasons trends for the high street and design element. Many people go to scours materials and shape design on garments. The exhibition was held from the 10th to the 12th of February and the day for students is usually the last day of the event so I had the opportunity to visit on the 12th. I have previously visited this event 2 years ago to fit a brief of Eco friendly fashion and thought it might be relevant to this assignment forecasting future trends. Since my last visit the exhibition has become a lot more commercial and had more brand awareness available. The outcome of this event was quite broad with them exhibiting many forms of fashion from accessories to shoes as well of course clothing. Unfortunately I missed one show at the event which is one of the reasons we went was for the WGSN outlook for next seasons trends but it was still worthwhile me going and later looking the show up online.
