Many explorers ransacked and pillaged Native and Meso American civilizations some include the Aztecs, Inca, and others. Many of the explorers who committed these acts were never punished some were even rewarded as in the case of Hernan Cortes who him and his 500 men lead to the down fall of the Aztec Empire.

While on his "expedition" he was wanted and fought and killed his way out of being taken into custody he made allies with thousands of other tribes and marched down to the second-largest city in the new world, Cholula, and slaughtered, pillaged, and burned down more than half the city as a message of fear to the incoming Tenochtitlan. After he and his men and the allied tribes marched to Tenochtitlan they then made the leader of the Aztec empire a hostage and then a great massacre happened Cortes and his men barely made it out of Mexico where they left smallpox leaving 1/2 of Tenochtitlan dead after their wake.

P.S.

Both, while they may have used the idea of Discovery to hide the fact that they were taking land, slaves and gold it was still discovering as they didn't know about the lands. But, I cannot in good heart say that most of the explorers sailed for acquisition of knowledge most did it for God, Gold, or Glory many forced Christianity on Native people stole Native's land for their own country and captured native people and forced them into slavery starting the slave trade. Many of the Colonies treated Natives very poorly and used them for wealth and labor.
