I have chosen this research theme due to my interest in the subject of crime rates within the prison service, as I want to be a prison officer when I am older, I think this subject will allow me to get an idea of what may happen, with my time in the prison service. The number of reported assaults in prison in 2017(29,500) was 13% higher than in 2016 and 44% higher than in 2015. Was this due to different ethnicities, race and nationalities or is it just due to the people and what it takes to stay high up in the hierarchy? http://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk
Another reason to why I have chosen this topic for my extended research task is because we - as citizens know the prison service to be there for punishment, to lose freedom and to pay for crimes committed, no matter how big or small. So why are crimes happening repeatedly inside the prison? and what can we do to stop it? In 2016/17, the average direct annual cost per prisoner in England and Wales was £22,933. http://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk
Shall the Prison officers, councillors and even citizens try more to help the prisoners, to try and rehabilitate the prisoners to not reoffend and to try and give them a stable life outside of prison? Would this help cut the costs many people pay in the UK to keep our country safe?

The focus of my research task will be to find out the main subject to why crime rates within the prison service is so high and whether diversity of the prisoners and prison officers effect the outcome. I also want to discover whether the different groups within prison service are subject to racism by other groups because of race, nationality and ethnicity and what causes this when entering the prison service? Does racism in society mirror the racism inside of the prison.

- My first objective when doing this research task will to make sure I am not bias towards one answer whether it is agreeing or disagreeing with the statement present. by doing this I will make myself sure of getting a fair and equal conclusion based on facts and statistics.
- Firstly to achieve a non-bias approach I will conduct a questionnaire, this will be a qualitative questionnaire, as to answer the question present, more depth may be needed. I will control the questionnaire to make sure different nationalities, genders, ages and people with different backgrounds will answer the questionnaire. I will make sure everyone gets the same question and understands the question present in the correct manner. this will allow me to get many different points of view, from very different people and approaches. I will use this to discover what people who have no connections with prisons think and what people who do have connections with prisons think. I will also want to find out from them whether the prison service deters them from committing crimes or not. Forming a questionnaire will help majorly when gathering information and statistics, it allows me to collect results easily with no hassle. However, the issue that might occur with my questionnaire would be that it is an online questionnaire, this means depending on the WIFI and how many people are active on that strand, the website that my questionnaire is uploaded to may crash, another disadvantage to having a questionnaire is that the answers may not be reliable, the participants may not give what they find truthful answers or may even search answers using the web.
- Another way I will conduct research is by primary
- Once I have conducted and carried out my questionnaire, I will use the findings from this and my primary and secondary information to discuss what could the public do to cut the crime rates and change the mindset of criminals in prisons who are still committing crimes. I would also be able to find out what the majority of people think of what happens within the prison and why they think the crimes happen. If this research and test shows that the prisons and what they do are effective within, then it would shows that the perception of prisoners and crime rates are untrue, and will help me come to a conclusion.
- After I have collected all of the information I need for a conclusion, I will put it all together with facts, statistics with peoples opinions from the questionnaires, and I will produce a report which will allow the reader to see the information leading up to my conclusion and why. Within my conclusion I will explain my own opinion, at the start of the task compared to what my opinions would be at the end of the task and report. I will come to a justified conclusion as I will put together all the information that I have collected previously, making sure that I am not bias throughout by looking at both sides of the argument.

Introduction/Literature review (for proposal)

In the UK, there are currently 80,002 inmates, and I'm here to find out how many of these inmates commit crimes within the prison, and why they commit crimes, whether its in their nature, or whether its to do with race, ethnicity or nationality, or any other reason. http://news.bbc.co.uk. I will do this by using primary information. "There are 8,554 inmates across the UK serving life sentences", is this because of the crimes they have committed within the service adding more time on again and again. or are the prisoners sentenced to this originally, and would this effect the crime rates within the prison, some of these prisoners may believe; 'what have I got to loose?' , their freedom has been taken for their life, could this impact the prison service should we think of reducing life sentences for people or not? I will be using primary information like this within my report, using titled articles, such as the BBC, the sun, the independent, etc. This will give me an insight on the publics opinions, in the way these articles have been written whether they have been targeted to support the prisoners or not. "The identification and management of ADHD offenders within the criminal justice system" the identification of ADHD is rising within prisons, does this show me that the crime rates is because of mental health, should we be giving the prisoners prison support groups, psychic help, and therapy so that when they are released back into the free world they have a better chance of not becoming second time offenders.

When carrying out my test, I will be using both qualitative and quantitative data. The academic definition of quantitative data are “measures of values or counts and are expressed as numbers. Quantitative data are data about numeric variables (e.g. how many; how much; or how often). Qualitative data are measures of 'types' and may be represented by a name, symbol, or a number code.” (www.abs.gov.au) Qualitative data is very private to the individual responding and it cant be measured like the qualitative data, as the data is more thorough and more precise to the question. This emphases the individuals feelings towards the problem in matter. This data will be significant for my research as I will be able to see how information differs between people and there feelings towards that subject. However this type of data can be difficult to collect from people, this data is long winded and can take up time, to write about it, to collect is, to read it and separate is into groups similar so I can gather the statistics, sometime with qualitative data is cant even be separated into similarities because every answer is individual to that specific person. The academic definition of qualitative data is “information about qualities; information that can't actually be measured. Some examples of qualitative data are the softness of your skin, the grace with which you run, and the color of your eyes”. (www.shmoop.com) Quantitative data, is data that is collects focusing on numbers, and the collection process. This data can be easily collected and put into statistics of the population and graphs. The advantages of this data would be that the information would be easy relay to others, and easy to put into statistics and graphs, making it easy for other people to read and gather the information themselves. Also the questions are basic in these types of questionnaires, meaning to answer them you don’t need any knowledge on the subject, just to have your own opinion.
