Genetic engineering is the modification of certain characteristics of an organism. Genetic engineering can have many advantages and disadvantages on the consumers, the farmers, and the environment. Genetic engineering can help improve poverty stricken countries by providing essential nutrients not naturally found in their environments. It can also provide negative effects, a lot of things that are still under scientific investigation. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) "cites animal studies showing organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, and infertility."

Genetic engineering the process of modification of organisms, this is important because genetic modification can help in providing a sustainable source of nutrients for people living in poverty stricken countries. An example is seen in a partnership between Zambia, a country in Eastern Africa, and the European Union in an attempt to provide food for the starving populations. Zambia denied the genetically modified maize for a period of time which caused famine and death in the society until they finally passed regulations allowing the genetically modified maize to be given to the Zambian population. This positively affected the population by decreasing the percentage of starving population.
