The Midwest is greatly influenced by the Great Lakes that can cause large, seasonal swings in temperature. It is usually warmer in the southern Midwestern states rather than the northern Midwestern states. In the winter, temperatures can drop down to -20 degrees and in the summer, temperatures can reach 100 degrees All types of precipitation are very common and tornadoes take place in most of the states in the Midwest.
