Sara Fortis was born in 1972 in Chalkis, a small town near Athens, Greece. She never knew her father because he passed away when she was only 2 years old. The Germans arrived in 1941. She heard about what was happening to the Jews. Sara and her mother escaped to a village called Kurturla and hid there for a while. When it wasn't safe for Jews, she told the villagers to keep her mother hidden. Sara decided to become a resistance fighter. She traveled from village to village to recruit other females who wanted to join after she left her mother. She formed a group of female partisans. She became a well-known fighter.
