Thanks to the quote “We’ve all been raised in television to believe that one day we’d be millionaires and movie stars but we won’t.” from the film Fight Club, we can wonder how much it is true.

To answer to this question, first of all, we are going to see how children are raised, then we will tell how the children are in front of the television.

First, the way children are raised had changed for several decades. Nowadays, parents are more permissive and less strict than before. When my great-grandmother spoke about her childhood, I thought I can’t complain about mine and most adolescents are in the same case.

Parents don’t have or don’t take time for their children. Indeed, a lot of teenagers can do anything they want and often they just want to watch television and do not doing anything else.

Then, the children are always in front of the television or in front of a screen. According to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, an adolescent spend 53 hours a week in front of a screen. The television broadcast adolescents watchare less educational than before. Nowadays, the television broadcast for adolescents stage “beautiful” men and women who don’t do nothing. Seen like this, teenagers can think they could do the same: not do studies and participate to a reality television.

The fact that children identify with the comedians make the quote true because the will want to become like them: famous and rich. But they only see the positive aspect and don’t think about the negative ones.

The children’s comportment for the studies has changed. Indeed, they don’t have the same goal than their great-grandparents. Before staying longer in studies was a privilege but now adolescents see it like a chore. Teenagers want to have a good job but they are too lazy to do the studies they need for their job.

To conclude, the quote is true because nowadays parents don’t behave like our great-grandparents behaved with our grandparents, in the past, parents can’t put their children in front of the television to have tranquillity because there was not a television in all the houses like today and the way children or adolescents sees the studies changed, stay longer in studies has become a constraint.
Maëva Marie-Luce

I think this quote is true because today, we grow up with TV and we learn really early that we can become star easily. According to this quote, we can see that the television sells us dream and a beautiful future, but unfortunately it’s not the reality. When we watch TV, we think we can become millionaires really easily, with no effort, but in the real life, if we want to earn money, we must to work really hard and to do lot of efforts. However, TV gives us hope and we will work hard to reach this goal.

Carteron Coline.
