Of course, it is possible to get bullied when you are using social media but I think your teenagers know how to behave there and will let you know if bullying happens there. It's a serious thing and if anything like that shows up, it has to be taken seriously and figured out how we can end that.
You were also worrying that you children will be in their room all day staring at their screens but there is an easy way to solve that problem. You should make rules for your teenagers' screen time so it will be clear for everyone how long they can stare at the screens.

Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother,
I understand your worries, you care about your children and don't want any harm for them. However, the internet is also a very good place, for example, it can be educational and people can get many friends from there. Of course, kids get bullied there and because of that you should sometimes ask what you do on the internet today. And you can give a speech to your teenagers not to give any information to strangers etc. And if they are teenagers I think they aren't also too young for the internet. As long as you are careful and use common sense you should be okay on the web.

Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother,
I can understand that you're concerned if you should let your kids be involved with social media. My opinion is that you should let them try it, otherwise they might feel like pushed out from everything. You were worried about your kids staying in their rooms staring at a screen all day. For that problem you should make up some screen time limits with them and sometimes you can suggest something for them to do like going outside etc.
Sometimes it can feel as if the social media was a dangerous place. You should not be worried about the strangers on social media if you discuss with your kids what they can do and what they cannot. So I recommend for you to discuss the threats with them for example, not to meet up with anyone who they don't know and who they have met only online.
Moreover, about the bullying on social media: you should remind them that it's wrong and if someone bullies them they should just ignore it or tell you about it. For all that, there are also many benefits on using the internet and the social media. They can get new friends and also learn many things that can become very useful in regard with the future.
Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother,
it's true that there are bad sides of using the internet and social media but there are also lots of good things. Your kids can benefit of using the internet too. In the future, the skills of using the internet and social media will be valuable for example in workforce. But like you said, there are also some things that you should discuss with your kids. The most important of them is dark sides of social media. For example, the crimes that happen on social media and the internet. However, what I'm saying is that you should let your kids be on social media and the internet but keep an eye on them. That way you can be with a calm mind.

Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother, you don't need to be afraid of social media. I am sure that your child only wants to be connected with his/her friends and other people around the globe. Of course, there are threats too, be worried about them. You need to tell your teenager to use only strong passwords, for example, their own name or birthday are worst. On the web anyone can fake identity, there are a lot of pedophiles and other scammers. Don't visit suspicious websites (for example pornsites) and don't download anything from them. I recommend using Adblock too. You need to discuss rules with your child, for example screen time and good and bad apps and sites. At least the internet is a fun place to spend time, but it has its dangerous side with a lot of threats.
Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother,
I understand your fear but using the internet and social media is normal nowadays and you don't have to be afraid of using it. You have to teach your kids how to behave on the internet and on social media. They don't have to believe in everything they see there, or take it seriously. Young people can meet new people and express themselves. Young people can learn for example new languages and find new interests. Parents can set their children's accounts private and teach them not to accept strangers to be their friends. You need to talk about the screen time with your children and set rules about it so they will understand the meaning of it.

Yours, Ask a Student

But if you want to check out what your kids are doing on the internet, you can, for example, download an app where you see what they do. You can also set time limit on the app how long your kids can be on the phone. However, it can sometimes be useful. And if you are sad that your kids spend too much time on their phones and they immure themselves, you can suggest that they would go outside with their friends to, for example, play football or walk and chat.
Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother, if you are so concerned, you can limit your kids screen time and encourage them to do something else like do some kind of sports. What comes to online threats like those weird strangers, you can always check their information and if it's not available, you should be careful with them. However, if your kid is being bullied you can file a police report depending on how bad it is and block the bully. I know how frustrating it can be when you're not able to really help your kids if they're getting bullied. Anyways, if you don't let them be involved with social media, they might get pushed away from their friends. Just take care of your kids and don't be afraid of asking regularly what they have done on social media.

Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother,
I think the answer is yes to your question. Social media is very important in many ways today. It is a very great place to keep in touch with your friends or what so ever. It is also a useful source of information if you use it properly. Sometimes social media can be a dangerous place to be, and the user must be aware of the dangers within it.
You were also concerned about the screen time. I think the solution to that is to maybe to put some limits to that device which your kids are using so the screen time does not become too long. I think that you should let your kids use social media but observe them if they are using it optimally.

Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother, I understand your worries. Social media can be a cruel place, but that is not the case usually. You can make a lot of new friends on social media and the people on there are usually very nice. Of course there are some exceptions and there are ways to dodge these people. For example, if you encounter someone who is not friendly, you can just block them. You should keep up on your children's activities on the internet by, talking to them and asking them about their internet activities. It's not always a waste of time. You can meet cool people on there and also, for example, get motivation to start a new hobby. Also everyone is on social media nowadays, so by not letting them on social media, you could be distancing them from their friends.

Yours, Ask a Student

Dear Concerned Mother,
before you even consider letting your teenagers sign up for social networking sites, you have to make sure they know about online safety. Your kids can be safe on the internet as long as they know about the possible threats and ways to avoid them. You can contact their school and suggest that they talk and teach about the subject to the kids. That way you don't have to worry about them meeting up with creeps.

Worrying about online bullying is very reasonable but even though online bullying happens, it's quite rare. As long as your kids know how to behave in social networking sites they don't have to worry about bullying. Even if bullying were to occur, there are ways you can stop it. If the bully is from the same school you can contact the school about it and let them handle the situation. You can also report the bully to the networking site or block them. The internet is often a safe and child-friendly place, but there are many dangerous people and places on the internet for example the dark web is a place on the internet where drugs and other illegal things are sold but usually kids don't know how to access it.You might also want to check on your kids from time to time and ask them if anyone has bullied or asked them weird questions on the internet.
