He instigated the fight with Tybalt, getting himself killed by Tybalt. His death pushed Romeo to take action and kill Tybalt, resulting in Romeo's banishment. Romeo's banishment in turn caused Juliet to lose her lover and thus pushed her to her "death".

Romeo says these lines after Mercutio's death, confirming his feelings:
"This day's black fate on more days doth depend. / This but begins to woe others must end." (3.1.124-125)
"Alive in triumph, and Mercutio slain! / Away to heaven, respective lenity, / And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now."
