As we had to create various products, there were various conventions that I had to follow to ensure that my selected target audience understood what genre I was representing and displaying. My product followed an urban crime theme. As of this I had to follow the various conventions that were associated with this genre.

When looking at the conventions of the genre we can identify a number of repetitive semantic and syntactic elements that have been used in media products. Due to the repetitiveness of these factors they then become social expectation and then turn into a convention. However these can been challenged by producers.

For example: there are various stereotypes for different social groups and if we use the black ethnic minority they have various diluted stereotypes such as stabbing, shooting and stealing. If a film was to challenge this form they could potentially change the black actors into the opposite and represent them as nice characters and the complete opposites to these stereotypes.

If we look at my product we can identify various conventions that are used within. When using the term urban we relate this to an environment that is densely populated by human groups or individuals. the term urban can be used to describe something or someone. However the official definition relates to in, relating to, or characteristic of a town or city.As we can see from Watching one of my media products that the establishments that are used are all within a town or city, This is one clear link for my media product following the convention of the genre.

If we look at Mise-en-scene we can link various conventions seen in other media products in my product, such as costumes the costumes in other media products are linked to the individual characters and become a uniform. In my product all characters are seen wearing tracksuits and Airmax trainers. This creates a uniform which links to the convention. When looking at the specific costumes that are used in this genre we tend to see tracksuits, hoods, trainers, baggy jeans and other baggy clothing as these items of clothing can conceal someone's identity easy and criminals do not want to be seen.

When looking at props that are used in this genre due to it involving crime there will be criminal activity within the media product and when we look at my product we see various crimes taking place within such as assault, drug dealing, fighting and shooting which links to murder and is clearly breaking the law. From these various actions and events that are seen in my product we can easily establish that it follows the various conventions that are repeated in other media products.

In relation to props within the production we seen guns, knifes, hammers and drugs. These are all props that are associated with real life criminals and as of this they have been incorporated into the genre so that various audiences understand that genre the product is representing. When looking at my product we see the distribution of drugs and the quality control process with these drugs. We also see that I have used guns in my product this is a main convention that is repeated in this genre to ensure that it is fulfilled. The guns in the production are not used in a positive way, yet a negative way throughout this fulfils the genre convention in contrast to real Media products.

Finally the final prop that is used in my production is the Knife this is key as this is a subtle item in media productions that may not be seen. However they can make a big difference within the narrative. Knifes are usually seen to have negative connotations associated with them and in my production they do also. This links to real media product conventions as in the film "AdultHood" the knife in the production is used to harm someone and in my production it is used with intention to harm.

The list of clear convention in a movie trailers are:

film titles and institution information: At the start of my production you are able to see the production information and also at the end you see the film logo title.

Certificates: At the start of my production we see the 'R' rated production certificate and this gives the audiences the chance to switch off if it is not suitable for them.

When looking at the colours and lighting we can that it is mainly set in a gloom setting and with dark or little lighting involved this creates an atmosphere of suspense and this is what i believe will engage my audience and follow the convention.

We also get character inductions throughout, even though some characters may be more dominant than others we get an insight into the characters backgrounds and their role within the film. This is what audiences want as they want to be able to engage with a character and feel how he feels whilst watching it.

when looking at the trailer they tend to stick to one colour but i have developed this convention within as i have involved a mixture of black and white clips throughout to break up the flow to keep audiences engaged. this will be beneficial in maximising audiences as this feature will keep them engaged.

also i have involved a variety of speeds in the clip. other media products don't tend to do this and normally stick to one set pace buy in my products i have a variety of speeds throughout to keep the pace engaging.

The front cover is what first draws attention to audiences, so it must do this well and capture the buyer’s interest, as of this movie magazines should be 'Eye Catching'

All movie magazines should have a masthead otherwise known as the name of the magazine, the masthead will be clear and impressive.

Magazines should follow a consistent set of styles, fonts and colours within. This then creates a house style. The house style is the colours and fonts commonly used throughout the magazine – most magazines tend to have a set colour scheme which helps to identify it.• Graphics are used to highlight special news or offers

Movie magazines will also always have additional information Additional information such as the price, barcode and date are usually found together They will be small as to not draw attention away from the main focus of the cover, but big enough to read.

Most movie magazines always have subtitles on there to give an explanation to the various headers. Subheadings advertise the main features that can be found inside the magazine. Important parts of these headings may be in bold or a different colour to stand out.

Conventions of movie poster!

It must be eye catching and captivating to the audience. There must be a focal picture that will draw in the audiences eye The title is displayed in a large, eye-catching font. It clearly defines the film’s genre• The poster should be designed to attract the largest audience possible. There is usually an indication of when the film is being released – either a date or ‘Coming Soon’, although they are sometimes less specific, for example they might say ‘In Cinemas This Summer.

Icons have an important role in film posters because audiences only have the one poster for them to understand the genre of the film, which will result in them either liking the poster ignoring it. If the story/theme and most importantly genre are not clear in the film poster, there is a risk that the film will lose out on an audience. This can prove disastrous as the film has had a high budget and loses an audience due to poor marketing they can then become unsuccessful.

Images! Images are the main feature of a movie poster as if the image is powerful and striking it can attract a wider audience as they engage with the image more deeply and creates an atmosphere or mood where the audience are intrigued to know and understand more about the production.

There will also be a Title displayed across the top which tends to either be a quote or the film title this needs to be bold and striking as this is what can make or break the poster as this is what the various audiences need to interact with and look directly at.

Directors, producers and actors Usually the director and producer of the film is displayed, especially if the director and producers are well known and are the main selling point of the film (eg. big name directors like Steven Spielberg or producers like Tim Burton). If it is a big name director/producer, then the name is big on the poster, if not then it is still visible but not as obvious. The actors of the film are listed either at the top or bottom of the poster, or at random points of the poster if the film genre can get away with random arrangements.

Quotes, recommendations and ratings Once a film has been screened to critics, the promotion team of a film can re-create posters or re-cut trailers to include positive reviews, ratings, feedback and recommendations.

Date, rating, extra info.Film posters need dates on them so that audiences who see the poster know when they can see it in the cinemas (or buy it on DVD if it is a DVD poster).

Conventions of Movie trailers

movie trailers normally show their Film production logos within the first part of the trailer, The production companies reputation can benefit the film trailer as if consumers see the production information on a film and enjoy that film they may watch another film produced by the institutions due to previous experiences.

The film title is in every trailer, so you know which film it is you want to watch and it is generally at the end of the trailer, so that you see if after you are already interested in the film and you are more likely to remember it. The font, colouring and back drop are also usually a good clue as to the genre of the film. As films like we’re the millers and Anchorman have bright colours and day lighting so it gives a mood of happiness. If you compare this to films such as paranormal activity you can identify a difference as this film has very little lighting and is generally dark to create suspense and a scary mood.

You will also see the age certification at the start of the trailers known as a “BBFC age certificate” this is to give the audience a pre warning to indicate if the film is suitable for them. These can vary on productions as r rated certificates obviously involve events and actions that are not suitable for young audience, in comparison to u rated certificates that are suitable for all audiences.

Character Introductions are an important feature of film trailers is character introductions, whether they have big Hollywood actors or not. This is essential because an audience get pleasure from films by connecting and relating to the characters, by their individual similarities, for example if there is a prominent young female character, people from the target audience who are young and or female connect to the character and are more likely to go watch the film. Also if the film has famous actors and or actress', and the audience have enjoyed some of their previous films, or are fans, they might go watch the new film because they know that they enjoy the actor's work.

Music and Voice overs Music is a key feature, and can make or break the film trailers. They show the pace of film, genre and often the budget, for example a film may ask an artist to specially make a soundtrack for their film, the bigger the film budget, the bigger the artists on the soundtrack. And people may think that a bigger budget means a better film.

Time Length Usually A film will have more than one trailer made, with different sections of the film edited together. There is always an official full trailer which lasts sometime between 1.30 -2 minutes, but often you will find, especially in horror, action or thriller films, they have shorter 10 second trailers which help build hype and will just have a short clip which may or may not have the film title shown.

Release date This is essential for attracting a large audience to the opening night of a film release. The release date is shown on trailers a couple of weeks before the film is released, giving time for a wide audience to have seen it,

On my product we can identify a variety of conventions of a movie magazine that i have used in my product to ensure it follows the conventions of a movie magazine.

We can identify a striking image that is centred to the page this is so that audiences who know the producer/actor can identify him easily and if they like him this will attract them into buying the product.

We can identify a Bold and big Masthead/title that is across the top of the screen. This stands out to customers and audiences, so if they walk past this magazine on a shelf they will potentially be intrigued and want to buy the product.

When looking at this magazine we can identify 4 main colours that are used. These are red, black, orange and white. As of these colours being used together they form a house style. This house style will be seen across a range of products in the future and become recognised and an established house style. So when consumers and audiences see the set of colours they will link it to this institution and if they like what they institution produces they may purchase the product.

We can also identify additional information on my movie magazine. We see that i have involved the website of the institution so that if consumers are interested in the company and want to know more they can view it online on their website. This will prove beneficial in increasing audiences and also increasing potential sales and profits.

there are a number of headers and sub-headings on the front cover that show the various articles that are within the magazine and what they contain.

If we look at how i have developed/challenged conventions we can identify a one main feature! this is the image! normally images that are placed on the front of the magazine are the actors in character. However if we look at the individual here we can see that he is the producer and actor and is positioned on the magazine not in role. this is not normally done and is an example of how i have gone against a typical conventions.

Also in terms of the magazine i have developed a convention by having a variety of styles within one magazine. Typically when looking at movie magazines they all stick to one theme in terms of budget as they are all directed to a certain class or status of people. however in my magazine we have a mixture of amateur and professional actors as we have blockbuster movies featured with urban low budget films. this is a clear example of a sophisticated feature with multiple audience elements and a clear example of developing a convention of movie magazines audience.

When looking at my product we can identify a variety of conventions that are on my products that are challenged.

Typically other products have a main actor on the poster, so that audiences who know the actor will be more attracted to wanting to engage with actor. However I have challenged this convention as I have chosen to put an image of a character holding a gun towards the camera so audiences feel as the gun is directed at them and i wanted this to connect with the audiences deeply and feel as if it is appointed towards them and then hope this lead them to watching my production.

I have displayed the title at the top of my product and it is in the centre. this is because once the viewers see the image they will look around it and see the film title and as of this they can have a mental note of the film with them so they can view additional information about the film later.

If we look at the bottom of the poster we can see that i have included the cast information this is so audiences will look at it and read the various names and if they have knowledge of any of the people this will potentially lead them to wanting to know more and this could lead to them watching the film as a whole or buying merchandise.

I have also included additional information so that viewers know a bit more and the stuff they need to like the release dates of the film and also the ratings and reviews that have been received towards this production. These reviews will be beneficial as they are all positive and this will make audiences think that it is all positive and if it is this will possibly lead to them thinking that they need to know more as they want to be apart of a great release.
