I decided to read this book after the watching the Netflix movie based off the book.  Right from the start I loved the book even more than I loved the movie, because it went more into depth about the main character, Lara Jean and the people surrounding her. I enjoy how the book talks more about her mom who passed away, it gave insight in why Lara Jean has issues trusting others around her and why she felt as if she wasn’t enough. Like for starters Lara’s sister, Margot was moving away to Scotland for college, this struck panic in Lara Jean. Margot was always the mom figure for Lara and Katherine, their younger sister. So, since she would be gone soon, Lara decided she needed to step up as a mom figure for her little sister. She began to cook, clean, take Katherine to school but this ended up stressing Lara Jean out she forgot to worry about herself. Which is something that wasn’t really present in the movie, then Lara Jean’s love letters got out, then everything became a crazy. The first person to confront Lara Jean was Peter Kavinsky, Lara’s middle school crush. He is the opposite of her, he was outgoing, a jock, he has the pretty girlfriend, that was until she became his ex. Peter brought up how Lara Jean and him should pretend to date so Genevie, Peters ex, and Lara Jean’s ex best friend could be jealous. Lara also agreed to do it because another person who she loved received a letter, Josh. Josh was also Margot’s ex, and instead of confronting the problem, she ran away from it. As time passed, Peters traits have started to rub off on Lara Jean, she started to lie more, she stopped talking to Josh, she went partying, and started hanging around the “cool” kids. I predict that since she’s starting to act more like Peter’s reckless self, she is going to get in to more problems with people who mean the most to her like her dad, sisters, Josh, her best friend, and even Peter. I think that it’s going to start bothering Lara Jean on how she let such an easy, solvable problem get out of hand. I believe if that does happen, she’s going to push herself away from everyone around her, causing her to be alone, and maybe even resorting to talking to Josh again, and if that does happen it amy cause drama between Margot and her.

Which my prediction was slightly correct. Lara Jean got into an argument with Peter because he planned a study date, so she cleaned her kitchen, and made him food, just for him to not show up with no explanation of why. So, Lara being her new bold self she decided that she would ask Josh for a ride to school even though Peter always takes her. When Peter confronts Lara, I noticed a major change in emotions from both characters, jealousy.  It was present on both ends, he didn’t like how she got a ride from Josh, and she didn’t like how he was hanging around Genevieve again. Now this can be detrimental to their “Fake Dating Contact” the feelings they were having were supposed to be fake but by the way the author is having the characters react to certain scenarios makes me believe they are gaining feelings for each other. I believe if Lara Jean does catch feelings for him she’s going to get scared, because she’s never been in a relationship, but she always says how she never wants to love anyone because if she does, and they don’t love her back, she’s going to lose another person in her life, like she lost her mom. I predict that Lara Jean and Peter will begin to express their emotions more, but then that will bring along more problems, because the whole dating idea is supposed to be fake. How can they get mad at each other for hanging around other people, especially if they aren’t dating? I think soon enough one of them will admit they care for each other more than a friend would, but are they ready to handle the commitment if their relationship is already based off a lie?

I was beyond wrong. Lara Jean tried to break up with her fake boyfriend! I wasn’t prepared for that at all! She just walked up to him and said “Hey we’re over! Sucks for you, go back to Genevieve.” Well, at least that’s what it felt like. Of course, Peter K. wouldn’t let her get away from him that easily, and told her the Winter Trip was around the corner, and since it was on the contact she had to go. Lara Jean having a weak spot for Peter she agreed to go, but during the trip she basically ignore Peter the whole entire time! Literally! So, Genevieve thought it would be a great idea to sneak in some time with her ex, Peter. This made Lara Jean ANGRY! I loved it. It was just further proving my point that she is gaining feelings for him, but she is still pushing him away which could ruin the whole entire relationship! And if they don’t end up dating by the end of the trip, I will cry. This is literally a perfect example of dramatic irony, we all know they have feelings, but they just want to be difficult. This whole “Fake Dating Contract” needs so go, and be shredded into a million pieces. I honestly think that’s what’s is stopping them the most, the stupid notebook paper contract. Every time someone makes a move, they always refer to the contract, and how they can’t go against the rules. My prediction didn’t happen! I read 355 pages of two people being madly in love with each other just for them not to get together! Over an argument they could have resolved if they just talked! I honestly wasn’t expecting it to end that way because of two things, one being in the movie “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” Lara Jean and Peter K. end up together, so I figure the movie and the book would be the same, but guess what? They aren’t which is totally not fair, I was expecting them to have been dating by the end of the book, my hopes weren’t fulfilled. My second reason I 100% believed they were going to get together was normal romantic books end that way, the girl falls in love with her prince charming and live happily ever after, except this book. What makes this whole situation worse though is Peter admitted his feelings and Lara Jean froze, after that moment everything went downhill. Thank god though that this book has another part to it, the next book of the series is called “P.S. I Still Love You.” So, I’m hoping in that book they can rekindle the love that was there, I have a bad feeling though that someone new will get in the way of their relationship, or maybe Peter will run back to Genevieve. If this does happen I will be so disappointed, because Peter just won’t talk to Lara Jean about the argument, she attempted to but now that she doesn’t have Peter she’s back to her usual shy self, so she back out the confrontation as soon as it didn’t go right. I hope by my next blog this problem will be over with.

I couldn’t handle my favorite book couple not being together. At first, I was shocked they even got back together because they seemed set and stone that their relationship was over with. They ignored each other, and hung out with their past lovers. I thought that meant they 100% moved on but oh was I wrong. Peter and Lara Jean have are getting closer to graduation. They’re also getting ready for their college life, but Lara Jean is breaking one of her mom’s biggest rules: DON’T FOLLOW YOUR BOYFRIEND TO COLLEGE. Guess what Lara Jean is doing though? trying to go to UVA with the Peter Kavinsky. I think this is going to stir up some drama between her older sister Margot, and Lara Jean. Margot broke up with her boyfriend, Josh because he was trying to follow her to college. As much as Margot loves Lara Jean I don’t think she will approve of this idea. Margot can also be very critical of the choices Lara Jean makes so this will probably make them go neck to neck. I also have this gut feeling that Lara Jean might not get accepted into the college of her dreams with her dream boy. If that does occur I think Lara Jean will be heart broken, and she may hold resentment against Peter for getting into the college that she loves. As of now those are the only obstacles I think may occur, their relationship seems very stable, but who knows what this next book is going to bring.

Lara Jean didn’t get into her dream school UVA. Even though I predicted she wouldn’t get in, I was still shocked that it happened. The moment acceptance letters were sent out and Lara Jean received the news she wasn’t accepted you could feel her emotions coming through the book. I felt consideration for her because as a high school student, college is one of the scariest things that can make or break you. This broke her because, she dreamt about going to UVA, the school only 15 minutes away from home, with her perfect boyfriend Peter Kavinsky, but all of that was crushed in a matter of seconds. I also predicted how this may cause tension between Lara Jean and Peter. At first, she didn’t want to talk to but, I believe that she was just her letting the fact set in she wouldn’t be attending UVA. Then later when Peter went to talk to Lara Jean she brought up “Well maybe if I was in lacrosse or the tennis team I would have got accepted in.” I believe this shows she’s bitter, she got her grades up, and her SAT score up. In the end, an athlete who had a lower GPA got in, that crushing her. I also believe there was foreshadowing in the book, but I’m not sure if I’m reaching beyond what I really need to. The seniors had gone on a field trip to New York, and when they were their Peter brought up “Can’t you picture us here after college? We could live in a skyscraper. With a door man. And a gym.”  Lara jean then quickly shut down that statement saying, “I don’t want to live in a skyscraper. I want to live in a brownstone in the West Village. Near a bookstore.” Peter then says, “We’ll figure it out” If the conversation does come I believe they are going to argue it later in the book.

At first, I was doubting Ms. Rothschild would say yes, because Margot was giving her cold shoulder. All the least Margot doesn’t seem to mind, I believe she understands at some point or another her dad was going to move on. A very big event occurred though, Lara Jean lost a very important figure in her life. Stormy. She taught Lara Jean to take risk, and how to be bold. She took the loss very hard. An Important character has begun appearing in the book, Peter’s now not so absent father. Lara Jean wants Peter to realize that even though his dad wasn’t exactly in his life he should still try to make a bond, because Lara Jean’s mom passed away so she could never have created one. This is where her and Peter aren’t seeing eye to eye with each other. She keeps arguing, trying to convince Peter to invite his dad into his life, but peter simply doesn’t want to. He is beginning to become cold to Lara Jean. I think this is going to become a main topic over their arguments. Another thing I noticed was how Peters mom makes very interesting claims towards Lara Jean. She keeps saying things that makes Lara Jean feel as if she doesn’t like her. Which is something she wants to bring up to Peter, but worries he might get mad at her for making a claim like that. As of right now I see nothing but a unclear foggy path for this couple.

She finally graduated high school, with that addition to finding out she got accepted into a prestigious college. Peter invited his dad to the graduation, but he didn’t go. I felt bad for him, because he tried giving his dad a chance then he didn’t take advantage of that. I’m still slightly worried for Peter and Lara Jean’s relationship because they spent a short amount of time away from each other and they could barely handle it. So, if Lara Jean decided that UNC is a better fit for her than William and Mary which was way closer then UNC. how will they handle it? Peter was even saying how all of it would be much harder then he assumed it would be. Margot came back from college to be at the bachelorette party for Ms. Rothschild. When she arrived back home though you could tell she didn’t feel at home. The walls where her mother’s pictures hanged, and where the pillows laid were no longer there. It was now cluttered with Ms. Rothschilds stuff. At first Margot didn’t make a scene, but then she went at Ms. Rothschild saying how she makes the house a mess. This caused stiffness throughout the whole house hold, because everyone had warmed up to Ms. Rothchild. I worry about Lara Jean’s and Peter’s relationship, and I’m worried Margot will never get used to the fact Ms. Rothschild will be around more, and she is her soon to be stepmom. I was really satisfied with the ending of the book although I do wish there was more to this series. Lara Jean and Peter broke up for a little bit towards the end of the book, which gave me the same vibes from “P.S. I Still Love You” I truly thought they weren’t going to get back together again, because Lara Jean made it seem as if she didn’t want Peter with her anymore. As they say though “If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, then it’s yours” Which relates to Peter and Lara Jean so much.  Each time they broke up they always ended up back with each other, because they love each other so much and are willing to work through the hard times to make it to the good ones.  I loved at how the ending of the book Peter wrote a new contract to Lara Jean which ties back to the first book from their “Fake Relationship” Contract. In the new contact, it states many things but the most important thing was “Lara Jean and Peter will always tell each other the truth, even when it’s hard.” I believe that’s the most important one out of all, because the reason they always argued is they were worried about the honesty and pain that comes with it. Something I think they realized now though is they need to talk to overcome their problems. I know Jenny Han will not make another book about Lara Jean or Peter as she directly stated that in the closing of her book, but I wish she did. I wanted to see grow up Peter and Lara Jean, but I guess it’s something I’ll wonder about forever.

I enjoy how different this book is from the last book I read “Always and Forever, Lara Jean” By Jenny Han. In comparison “Always and Forever, Lara Jean” was very formal. It was also very romantic, and slightly see through; meaning even though some things didn't go as I thought, the ending was obvious. While “The Hate U Give” is very raw. The main character in the book is Starr, and she's brutally honest. She's raised in Garden Heights. Where the thugs live, and shootings are common. While Starr does live in Garden Heights she attends a predominately white school, and it’s a private school. She expresses how she doesn't feel as if she belongs with the Garden Heights kids because she wasn't raised like them, nor really around them. She also says how they sometimes diss her since she goes to a mainly white kids school. She also feels as if she doesn't belong with the from her school because they're all white, while she does admit they give her more “points” for being one of the only blacks at the school. I like how the title of the book represents more of deeper meaning. “The Hate U Give” is an abbreviation for the word THUG. The title came from Tupac Shakur’s “THUG LIFE” the abbreviation as a whole means The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody. In the book they explain how what society gives the youth, bites them (society) in the butt when kids began to disobey. I was curious to see if that was true. So, I actually searched it up and in fact it was. You can feel Starr’s emotion through the book. When Khalil got shot the author got through how Starr felt like she couldn’t breath. Her emotions were to much for her to handle. Starr at first was denying being the witness of Khalil’s murder, but she then began to realize how much she’s losing. She realized that by her not speaking up it allowed for any false claims to come in. When they started to call Khalil a “thug” who “threatened” the officers life, a switch flipped in Starr. Even without the author saying “This changed Starr” or blatantly telling us, you notice Starr progressively change.  She began to speak up more for herself, and for Khalil. A big moving point for Starr is when she did a interview, standing up for Khalil. I’m hoping Starr will come forward more openly though. As far as I am into the book she hasn’t completely came forward and said “I’m the witness” In the interview her identity was hidden. Starr worries about coming forward because she knows how she can receive backlash. Which I can see why she would worry. Her family is full of gang affiliation, she goes to an all white school (and hello the officer who she’s going against is white!), and this murder has made widespread news so EVERYONE knows about it. After the interview aired people didn’t know who it was (obviously since it was an interview where they didn’t show her face) Internet trolls rolled in saying Starr didn’t respect cops and some even sent death threats. In the future, I hope she does more interviews, I hope she gets across how traumatized this experience has made her. I hope she gets justice for Khalil. I began reading this book after my English teacher recommended it to me. When I asked the title of the book I was in pure shock. The name of the book was also my birthday. I felt a slight connection to the book and I haven’t even read a single page. When I first began reading the book I was honestly skeptical. The book opened up with Fallon saying “I wonder what kind of sound it would make if I were to smash this glass against the side of his head.” I was confused and simultaneously shocked. I had so many assumptions until I got further into the book and realized Fallon had resentment against her father, because she felt as if he wasn’t even a true parent to her. Fallon just consider him her manager and acting coach, that was until THE tragedy struck. She lost her father, her career, she lost her confidence, and she honestly just lost herself. Fallon went out to lunch with her dad when he kept discouraging her, Fallon ultimately got annoyed of the man and needed a break. She went to the restroom and returned, her dad was still being the unfiltered man he was. This is when Ben Kessler steps in. Ben acts as Fallon’s boyfriend to make her dad, Donovan O’Neil confused. Ben acts just like Fallon’s dad unfiltered, but instead of beating up on Fallon’s already bruised confidence, he beat on her dads ego. Her dad at first was flustered. He didn’t know how to handle the situation, I mean he was always used to being treated like royalty. Her dad ultimately couldn’t handle the heat of Ben’s honesty and stormed out the restaurant. This left Ben and Fallon alone. Fallon questioned what Ben’s true intentions were and Ben wanted to know more about the girl sitting in front of him. The one thing they both had in common was they didn’t want to leave each others side. I enjoy how the author made this book from both the point of view of Fallon and Ben. It provides both of their thoughts and feelings. I believe Fallon and Ben will eventually end up dating each other. I know I must be crazy, but the way they talk about each other makes me believe it’s a good possibility even though Fallon is moving. They also aren’t going to keep connection to each other. Instead they will meet every year on November 9th until they’re 23. I’m excited to see how each November turns out, and hopefully they get together! The second November 9th they met, Fallon’s flight had a delayed, yet Ben waited 2 hours for her. They had a difficult getting in contact with each other, because they wouldn’t exchange numbers with each other. Yet, they were still able to push past the obstacles and meet up. I enjoy how much happiness they bring in each others life, but I also worry. What if something were to happen to the either of them, how much would this impact them?  Ben brings so much confidence to Fallon, he makes her scars feel normal. Fallon makes Bens dark life a little more bright. The 3rd November 9th had failed, because Ben’s brother sadly got in a car accident. This car accident resulted in the death of Kyle, Ben’s brother. When Fallon received this news, she didn’t know how to react. Fallon at first believed he forgot about her, and their promise. When we switch to Ben’s point of view you find out Ben was hoping she met someone new, and forgot all about him. He couldn’t stand the idea of letting Fallon down. Of course relived she was there, he still had the feeling of guilt take over her. He kept expressing how all he needs is Fallon to keep him happy, to make him feel better. I as said though they’re so dependent on each other I’m worried that they’re going to come back on the next November 9th with tragic news or they’re hopes getting destroyed.
