I was just thinking and it is two decades ago that I was sat in B55 as a student and you were showing me how to use a CRT oscilloscope (I think it was during the ultrasonic distance sensor lab)!

You were also a great help when I first started teaching and I'll always appreciate that. You do an enormous amount of teaching/project supervision and will leave an absolutely huge hole to fill.

You'll be missed around the place, no matter how hectic and busy we were, we always found time to have a laugh and a joke to help us keep sane!

I hope that COVID doesn't ruin your retirement plans too much!

Perhaps, like me, you expected to be in Leeds for just a few years ... but we are .. a crazy length of time later! Over all those years I've seen you devote an immense amount of effort to the School, and help and support thousands of budding electronic engineers ... as well as teaching us, your colleagues, a few things too! Your "retirement" is hugely well-deserved, but I suspect it's not really "retirement" ... you're simply going to be extremely busy in the Canaries, rather than in UoL. So, congratulations on a really successful career at Leeds, and congratulations too on engineering your escape!!

I remember you joining the School (Department!) in the early 1990s, and becoming popular with students in no time. It has been a great pleasure – and inspiration – to teach alongside you in so many ways. I’ll always remember the labs we used to teach in the old days (when oscilloscopes were proper instruments with no fancy ‘auto-scale’…!) and I’ve lost count of how many project vivas we’ve conducted together, where you put students at ease with your humour and always drew the best out of them. In your teaching, I always admired your desire to understand how students might interpret things, and go the extra mile to make things clearer.

Above all, I’ve always appreciated your flexibility and willingness to teach a range of topics. So, you will leave a very large gap to fill; my ‘workload’ spreadsheet now has a lot of holes! This just goes to show what an extensive contribution you have made and how much you will be missed by all of us.

I am, like many I suspect, quite envious of your timely escape. Of course, none of the current situation was on the horizon when you decided to retire… but you’ve certainly timed it well!

I wish you a very happy retirement, and many more years of creativity, exploring the world, your family and, of course, your great sense of humour!
