Labradoodle were originally bred to be service dogs by Wally Conron. They are still service dogs but are more commonly seen as domestic dogs. Wally Conron met a Hawaiian woman who was blind and needed a service dog but didn’t want it to shed hair because her husband was allergic to it. Labradoodles are high energy dogs as they need a walk every day and are cute and appealing. Labradoodles don’t shed and are hypo allergenic. However Labradoodles aren’t immune to hip dysplasia eye problems and ear infections. Labradoodles can live for up to 15 years.
- Mawiya

Strawberry selective breeding

History:
Before modern strawberries appeared, the Fragaria virginiana (wild strawberry) was the most commonly used strawberry in Britain. This strawberry was bred with the Fragaria chiloensis, a common strawberry from South America and brought to France. This was done because the Fragaria chiloensis was large in size and good tasting and that the Fragaria virginiana is resistent to bad weathers. The breeding o& these 2 species was done by 2 very successful breeders: Andrew Knight and Michael Keens. The end result was the Fragaria ananassa (modern strawberries)

Advantages:
Breeding species of strawberries creates new breeds of strawberries that have very useful traits such as larger fruits, quicker growth rate as well as resistant to bad weather. This allows a more demanding supply chain of strawberries thus causing farmers to make More money and people to enjoy strawberries more.

Disadvantages:
The traditional way of selective breeding with plants (breeding different species with ideal traits) is very time consuming and not a specific efficienct. There isn’t a guaranteed chance of successfully breeding the perfect strawberry with the most suistabke traits. This means that the process is purely luck based and farmers and breeders may spend many frustrating year in an attempt to breed the perfect strawberry.

Carrot Selective Breeding

How has it been changed through time?
- The regular orange carrot, that we see today, were derived from the wild carrot, which has whitish/ivory coloured roots. The most popular, orange rooted carrot, is derived from yellow rooted domestic varieties, to make it less bitter to the taste. Early writings in classical Greek and Roman times refer to edible white roots, but these may have also been parsnips, or both. There are white rooted carrots in existence today, often used as animal feed or a usual crop.
Why?
- the carrot has been changed because it has been selectively bred for its greatly enlarged, more pleasant-tasting, less woody-textured taproot.
Advantages of the carrot:
- Polyacetylenes are phytonutrients were recently discovered to be present in large quantities in carrots. Polyacetylenes function as a natural pesticide that ward off fungal infestation in the roots of carrots. These polyacetylenes were found to decrease the growth and proliferation of cancer cells.
- The abundant carotenes in carrots appear to protect cardiovascular health as well.
- Carrots are a source of vitamin A, with one cup of this vegetable already capable of providing more than four times the RDA for this nutrient. Vitamin A has many functions in the body but one of its most crucial roles is to protect from macular degeneration, which can cause blindness.
Disadvantages of carrots:
- Too much consumption of carrots as well as other yellow- or orange-colored fruits and vegetables may result in the condition called carotenosis, which is characterized by the orange discoloration of the skin.
- Carrots may interfere with the absorption of medications for blood sugar regulation.
- Some people have noted sensitivity to carrots as well. As it turns out, carrots’ main allergen protein is a potential cause for allergen cross-reactivity between mugwort and birch pollen, and so individuals who are allergic to the pollen of the latter mentioned plants may possibly be allergic to carrots as well.

Created by Ellie Favreau 🐉

Strawberry breeding started with traditional plant breeding to molecular breeding and genetic engineering in the 20th century. Wild strawberries are very small compared to strawberries sold in shops. The seeds on the outside of the wild strawberries also poke out a lot more and the wild strawberries' shape is rounder in general. The large property of the strawberries comes from France's Fragaria chiloensis that originates from South Africa and was brought to france by a French spy.

Culivated strawberries are larger and smoother to be more appealing to consumers: buyers will always choose the biggest, best looking strawberries. Modern strawberries grow twice a year (as opposed to only once) due to breeding with the Fragaria viridis.
