I have always wanted to try the IUD version but have been very worried and scared about the side effects and I don't have a lot of information on it.
History of the IUD:

Based on this article, it takes a look at the history of the birth control method intrauterine which is also known as IUD. In 1995 it was one of the most popular birth control drugs behind the pill until 2014 when it's negative feedback started to take over the public's opinion and view on the birth control. The three factors that helped it make a huge plummet out of the public's lives was when the Dalkon Shield IUD was taken off the market due to the several deaths and injuries it caused. The second factor is the fact that IUDs were not modified or improved since the creation. All the sources and research that was put into creating IUDs were halted and people decided to put everything into new methods of birth control. The last factor that negatively impacted IUDs was the fact that more people were getting pregnant as teenagers and the public did not want to promote more teenagers into having sex to try and reduce the amount of teen pregnancies the country was facing. Luckily, IUDs have been improved and have made a comeback and become one of the most popular forms of birth control again. Citation: Elizabeth Siegel Watkins (April 2021).

Based on the New York Times article, it states that about 3 to 5 million women use the intrauterine device. I found this research while searching for the risks IUDs may have on women. This article relates to my topic because it shows how often women use it which helps to reflect how popular this type of birth control is compared to the other methods of birth control.

In this article, it talks about how the IUD can be reversed and removed. The most common way to have it removed is by having a doctor tug on the string in most countries. I found this piece of evidence by attempting to find sources that help to explain how and if IUDs could be removed. This is beneficial to my topic because it helps to show how easy it is to have it removed in most countries.

Citation: Sui-Lee, Wee (2017, Jan 08).

Based on the journal article, it helps to explain the reasons as to why the IUD isn't as popular in the United States as it should be. For example, it says that the high cost and low recommendations that are based on the race and ethnicity of the person play a big part in the low popularity. I discovered this evidence while exploring the areas where IUDs are most popular and looking at the inequalities of it. Citation: Sweeney, M., Eeckhaut, M., & Gipson, J. (2020).

Some of the advantages of the IUD is how effective it is, the fact that it lasts 5 to 10 years which is helpful for women that have low income, and it's not as expensive as the other methods since you only have to do it once every 5 to 10 years. It also provides a good long time option if a women doesn't want to get sterilized and her spouse doesn't want to get a vasectomy. I discovered this research while looking for the history of the IUDs. This is important and relates to my topic because it provides a list of benefits that IUDs have. Citation: Hubacher, D. (2002).
