In a letter to his friend, Frances Butler Leigh, a former slave owner, complained of the new rule that any Southerner who refused to pledge allegiance to the North would disqualify white men who still felt strongly for the Confederacy, while simultaneously showing an underlying anger that Black people could vote. (Document 2.) A thorough example of the South’s inability to let go of the war, many previous slave owners felt similarly, believing that this was an “injustice” and being unable to see Black people were suffering much more. This kind of mindset is what would lead to increased feeling of white supremacy and more individually targeted racism and violence, such as the Ku Klux Klan and the many lynchings of the time period.
