The Federal pretended to be someone on Peyton's side, then after finding out what Peyton was going to do he rode off to tell the soldiers. We know this because Peyton spoke freely to the man, then it said that the man was a Federal scout.

Peyton Farquhar was tricked because the soldier told him that it is possible to mess with the railroad and the wood would be easy to burn, and then the soldier backtracked northward past the plantation again. Peyton thought that he was talking to someone who was in the Southern army, however, the soldier is said to be a Federal Scout after meeting with Peyton, and probably reported him.

Peyton Fahrquhar was tricked by one of the scout's saying that he was on peyton’s side. The scout lead him to the owl creek bridge and told him “a civilian and student of hanging” and tricked him into thinking it was someone who was getting hung that day on the bridge but it was actually Peyton getting hung, and the man who tricked him was a Federal scout.

The Federal pretended to be a Confederate and was friendly to Peyton, and acted like he was with him, but then when he found out he ran away.

Peyton was a normal man, unless it had something to do with the South. He would fight and do whatever it takes to protect his land. When a soldier came one night telling Petyon he could do something to help, he lept at the opportunity. From that point on he was a Federal Scout. At the time Peyton had no idea the soldier was lying. The soldier went back Northward and told the people what he was planning to do, which led to him being in this trouble.

Peyton Farquhar was tricked because the Federal Scout told him that The Yanks are repairing the railroads, and ready for another advance. He acted like he was on Peyton's side and would support his decisions, but ended up tricking him. The scout came northward, wearing grey-clad clothing, said the task would be easy to do and good wood to burn. He rode away, thinking that was the last time they would meet, but the man came back, and Peyton figured out he was a Federal Scout.

Peyton was tricked because the scout was a gray-clad soldier. I know this because I learned that a gray-clad soldier, is someone who pretends to be a confederate soldier. He tricked Peyton into thinking that he was on his side, when in reality, he was about to lead him to his death. The text says that the scout met Peyton, rode off, then an hour later, he returned and continued the opposite way he had originally left. Which is when Peyton found out that he was a Federal scout.

Peyton was a civilian who lived northward, he was tricked because he tricked himself. I think in the text when he's "escaping" that its him picturing himself running back home to his family. So while in the text the federal scout is firing ammunition at him, and is trying to have him killed, he is actually just standing there ready to be hanged. He tricked himself into thinking that he was going home to his family and was going to have a happy ending. Just to end up "springing forward to his wife" (or the lady hes imagining) and feel a stunning blow upon the back of his neck, which is him being hanged.

A Federal Scout rode over to Payton's home pretending to be on his side. Payton, unknowingly told this man his plans. After the scout learned of these plans he rode off to tell the other soldiers. Payton was then accused of treason.

A scout told civilian, Peyton Farquhar about the bridge while riding through. Farquhar thought that he was on his side but he was actually a Federal scout against the south. We know this because he seemed friendly when speaking to Farquhar. Farquhar then went to burn down the bridge when a gray-class soldier found him.

The Federal scout acted like he was on Peyton's side. He told him to go to the Owl Creek Bridge and he then lead him there and then was friendly to him until they came to the Bridge.

The Federal may have been a Union soldier who was also a Confederate sympathizer and he may have given intel that was important to the northern states to the southern states behind Peyton's back.

Peyton was tricked by a federal soldier when the federal was actually a confederate and acted like he was Peytons friend and he led Peyton to the Owl Creek Bridge and told him someone was getting hung that day but it was actually Peyton getting hung.

Truthfully, the yanks* soldier* was lying by omission, as he never directly stated that he was a southerner. The man leaves the couple and returns northward*.

A Federal scout had disguised himself as a Confederate troop, wearing gray and using certain phrases such as "yanks." This soldier had gained the trust of Peyton quite easily, so he gave up his plans, fating himself to be the one being hung upon the bridge as the scout spoke of.
