Not only was the community uninformed on a local level, but most likely in a state-wide level due to the paper's desire to keep the sleepy status quo. While the community would be dreadfully uninformed, it would also reinforce the conservative anti-civil rights movement notions that it had. This would result in an 'us' vs. 'them' mentality that would also prove disastrous. More so than anything, people were not informed of the lack of rights and horrible acts the black community faced. A solid ignorance from the white population of Jackson because of the lack of stories from the Jackson Sun would lead to more and allow further if not worse acts of injustice towards the black community. In general, when newsworthy events are not covered, ignorance begins to take hold of the population and disarray as well as corruption may follow. Heavily based opinions with no news lead to misinformation and an overall bias that can't be fact-checked or even truly validated.

If for anything the need for retrospect is demonstrated in the history classes that many schools offer and how often it is mentioned in other subjects as well. Retrospection allows us as humans to learn from our mistakes and further progress our society. Knowing our roots helps us build a base and work up from it. Recognizing history, acknowledging it, and learning from it is what makes retrospection such an important factor in our day to lives. From the awareness that we gain from retrospection, we, in turn, obtain a richer life experience understanding our roots and life in general. Retrospect is important in a historical standpoint so that when we make our decisions we don't make the same mistake as in the past. When we gain knowledge it helps us understand the information we share and take in from the news.

I would say that it is important, in any capacity, to own up to all mistakes made, whether in the present or past, however it would be more ideal for the people from the past to acknowledge and take accountability for their own mistakes, when they were happening, for it was their primary responsibility.

The lack of coverage on the African American's affected them because when they had first started going too an all american school they were being treated horrible, American mom's had went and protested against them going to school with their kids. When African Americans do something wrong they are sent to jail or worse killed, but when Americans did something wrong they would ignore it or blame it on a African. The newspaper would not talk about this or say anything against it

I believe that it is the responsibility of the newspaper to acknowledge past wrong doings. This is vital considering that it is impossible to change history we need to learn from our mistakes in order to never repeat them. If we do this than hopefully it will lead to a world where most articles are unbiased and accurate.

In my opinion, I think that people need to be aware of the mistakes in the past in order to learn from them. People also in the present need to own up to mistakes in all circumstances in order to build responsibility.

I think it's so important for people to acknowledge problems made in the past. If they were not addressed, the problem could get worse. For something to get better, it has to be talked about. It's important to discuss why these problems occur in order to prevent them from happening again. Just because things happened in the past, it doesn't mean these faults won't happen again.

The Lexington Herald was unnewsworthy when they were not focusing on the topics of Civil Rights from 1959. People would write these articles and not post them in papers for certain reasons. They were biased about who they were talking about.

I personally think they both were right. Even tho The Jackson didn't apologize in public they clearly seen the wrong in there article and went and improved there coverage. Lexington Herald apologized but didn't right an new report but the fact that they looked over there wrongs shows that they care.

I believe that the Jackson sun had a better approach. I believe this because the Lexington herald simply issued an apology. while they did reflect on their past mistakes they didn't do anything to try and make up for it. Unlike the Jackson sun who created an entire series of articles about the movement with many other online resources.

I think the lack of news coverage on the event fueled the event more, because this protest happened and people were arrested but their towns newspaper hid it from the public like it never happened. Which would cause people to do more to be heard from than swept under the carpet.

I think the apology was better off than the Jackson Sun. The Jackson Sun just refused to write about the event, but at least The Herald-Leader apologized for it. I feel like I could trust the Herald-Leader if they wrote a story remarking the Civil Rights movement if I lived in that time.

I think the better approach is The Jackson Sun, because they gave resources and gave info and also information on the topic, not just apologizing for the neglection to cover civil rights.

If you were to apologize for your wrongdoing and never do it again it would be fine with me. The responsibility they took in to make the apology must have taken quite a lot of processing and must have been weight in their shoulders.

The Lexington Herald failed to cover newsworthy events regarding civil right issues due to plenty of the reasons. Interestingly enough, while the owner of the paper and the editorial team was for desegregation, ironically they still downplayed the events of the civil rights movement because of the paper's fear of the hysteria. The white population feared the black voices in power all of a sudden. They focused on less newsworthy topics rather than the civil rights movement, fearing of the controversy and outcry the public may push back in their face. In turn, this would lead the public to be less informed as well as lead the black community into further pits of being ignored and mistreated tremendously.

The Lexington Herald failed to cover newsworthy involving the civil rights because the publisher had hated the blacks and didn't want to know anything about them. So when the blacks had challenged that system with sit-ins and protest they had ignored them.

Some of the reasons that the Lexington- Harold would not cover most of the civil rights stories was because of racial bias and because they felt that if they did publish the stories, it would stir up conflict at the time and they wanted to keep things steady and calm.

In my opinion, I believe the Jackson Sun's approach was far better than the Lexington-Herald approach. While it is good and well meaning that the Lexington-Herald acknowledged and apologized for their lack of coverage, it doesn't necessarily mean that all is forgiven and that anything can truly be based off of what could only maybe be a sincere apology. While it doesn't forgive and and excuse the actions of Jackson Sun's ignorance, the paper still went beyond simply apologizing but recognizing its mistakes and physically working a great deal to pay for their misconduct. It shows that they, in the future, want to be something better and provide news coverage of anything be it controversial as well. Again, while it doesn't erase the history of Jackson Sun's racism, the fact that they put a true effort to produce stories of the civil rights movement proves their desire to express their apologies deeply and promise to be an ethical and credible newspaper.

It is the wrongdoer's full responsibility to acknowledge their mistakes in a situation whatever it be. Taking responsibility for one's mistakes demonstrates maturity and humility which is needed to live and work with others of differing opinions. It's alright to be wrong, and at one point all human beings will face a point where they have done something wrong in nature, but having the character to understand wrongdoings, acknowledge, apologize, and work to further better oneself helps relieve the issue at hand.

I think that Lexington-Harold had the better approach because they acknowledged their wrongdoing and provided new resources. For the Jackson Sun, although they gave new articles, they did not formally apologize for what they did and recovering the article would be slightly inaccurate because they weren't there.

I think that we have the responsibility to acknowledge and learn from the mistakes, but we shouldn't have to face the consequences and apologize for people who don't share the same ideas as us.
