My grandma's family had a history of diabetes, so throughout her life she made sure she did all she could to avoid getting the condition herself. She tried maintaining her weight and body fat level, she stayed active, ate plenty of fiber and whole grains and make overall healthier choices. Sadly though, she still got diabetes, but it is the mildest type. If she had not done all of these steps, it would have been worse.

Each person is responsible for taking the risks into consideration. The textbook says, "Tobacco use, unbalanced nutrition (too many calories and/or too much of one food group and not enough of the others) and a lack of physical activity are some of the key risk factors for the most common causes of death," (2). You must ask yourself questions and analyze your current health standing to see if you are taking any of these health risks. Everyone must also keep their heredity and family history in mind. Unit 5.1 stated, "It’s true that heart disease, stroke and some kinds of cancer tend to occur more often in people who have a family history of the disease," (3). If you are aware of any diseases in your family history you should be extra cautious to avoid them. Each individual also needs to eat healthy and exercise according to their own needs and capabilities. The text gives good advice, "Fruits and vegetables are important sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber. To improve your eating habits, you’ll want to cut down on foods that are high in fat and calories, such as soda pop and hamburgers," (3).
