Will’s father stood facing the glass tides, the waves, the gauntlet of horror he knew waited for him to swim through, stride through to fight the desiccation, the annihilation of one’s self the waited there. He had seen enough to know. Eyes shut, you’d be lost. Eyes open, you’d know such utter despair, such gravities of anguish would weight you, you might never drag past the twelfth turn. But Charles Halloway took Will’s hands away. “Jim’s there. Jim, wait. I’m coming in.”

There appears to be no way to rescue Jim without self-destruction, yet Charles plunges ahead. What has happened to this mild-mannered janitor that has made him a Superman?

Despite his best effort, Charles begins to drown in the sea of mirrors, facing the one thing that terrifies him: age. In an effort to save his father, Will lights a match and tells his father he loves him no matter his age, and suddenly Will’s father recalls what has enabled him to be victorious in the library and in the Bullet Trick.

As Jim begins to ride the carousel, this is how he is described: “He wanted, he did not want. He wished, he rejected, he ardently wished again, in flight, in heat-spell river of wind and blaze of metal, in jog of July and August horse . . ..” Jim is torn between his deepest desire and his knowledge that he is about to “sell his soul.”
