First Days of School Activities for "Big Kids"

Through teacher training the importance of that first day and week of school have been stressed over and over. Here are some ideas to use or modify to get to know your students and engage them quickly. I also really enjoy the STEM activity as many STEM lessons/activities match up fairly well with the new NGSS standards. This is a great reference tool and contains activities that that I would consider appropriate from grades 4-8.

6th Grade - Classroom Management via cues and responses.

I picked this video because of how well the cue response method worked within this classroom. While 6th grade is on the lower end of upper elementary and I don think that 8th graders would respond in quite the same fashion, I do believe that the cues and responses could be modified for 8th graders. From this video I learned that it is possible to temporarily allow students to talk among themselves, and with the proper conditioning you can allow students freedom to talk with peers and quickly snap them back into the lesson efficiently and without being abrasive.

This is a short, personal account of a first year middle school teacher. He does a great job of identifying the problem not as the single incident that took place, but rather the way that he treated the children. He talks about his students being able to easily tell if they are respected and valued, and the profound impact that genuinally showing students that they matter in these ways can solve more problems than any set of rules.

What I like most about this article is that it talks about the tendencies of middle school students academics to suffer due to the social pressures and bodily changes that are occurring. It also reinforces relationship based teaching. Something that I pride myself on making a corner stone of my teaching philosophy.
