1) For the pattern in her dress I used letter stamps. I got inspired when I saw the letterpress station while taking the workshop tour. You can barely see that there a many »a«'s hidden in her dress, but if you take a closer look it's a nice detail to discover. I also used oil crayons for the first time (:

2) She was wearing a lot of layers, which inspired me to draw her different clothing items on multiple layers of plastic. I enjoyed this technique, especially the effect the drawing gets when the layers don't fit perfectly.

3) For this sketch I tried drawing on bubble wrap. I wasn't really satisfied with the outcome, so I turned the bubble wrap around and continued drawing on the other side. By doing this I created a second layer and got the chance to rework areas, which I didn't like in the beginning.

4) Her mesh blouse was see-through. To include this effect in the drawing I cut out a layer of plastic to the shape of her blouse. I also tried scratching parts of the white crayon to include more details.

5) For the details on her clothing items I used yarn and embroidered it into the paper. I used it for the chain and metal buckle on her purse and the pattern on her boots.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed today’s workshop, because I got the chance to try many techniques, which I normally wouldn’t use. It was inspiring to see how my classmates work and it made me think of different ways to approach my drawings in the future.

It's really interesting to use different materials to try life drawing. Thank Greg and Paul for their generous offering of the paper and ink and Greg has been patiently to give hints during each drawing. It's also inspring to see other students' artworks. I'm impressed with Veronika's drawing with transparent plastic layers and some students' collage.
In my practice I try to use the materials that I am not familiar with, such as the charcoal, crayon and the black/grey paper. Although it should be a black and white practice, I use a little bit of color in my drawings when I think it is necessary. I also tried different techniques such as collage and combining the different materials (e.g. wet and dry materials) together. I tried different omposition/frame with the cutted paper. Not every outcome is successful but I do gain lots of experience in the process and become more familiar with the materials that I tried before such as pastel. Also it is totally different to do life drawing compared with drawing from photograph. And because the time is limited, sometimes you can create different effect on the works.
There's still a huge gap between the cognition and practice in reality. Although Greg has been mentioning "think about the influences", I barely think of anything but how to draw this very person with unfamilair materials and how to arrange everything. I think maybe drawing and painting are actually instinctive and spontaneous, and more importantly, physical, because your hands and eyes have to move, and the influence of other people is unconscious. But it's a great experience and it undoubtedly increases my bravery and creativity.

In the first three sketches, I tried to use the technique that I was more familiar with - the combination of different painting materials (paint plus oil pastels and a pen) to do some different permutations, but to be honest, the outcome is not ideal as what I expected, at break time I saw many of intelligent classmates tried to use paper to do some collage, inspired me to use positive and negative space to complete the sketching, so during the fourth sketch, I cut off the human figure and then used the painting material to fill in the details, and the last one I use paper directly to make clothes, The human body is left blank, which I think creates another interesting effect.

Today's lesson allowed me to learn to use the properties of materials to their maximum effect and to do a sketch with methods that I hadn't tried before.

I tried to make some collages with my previous collection of electronic materials, and I used them to show the textures of the clothes, which I found to be fun and better than hand-drawing. I brought some solid fabric materials before the class, but the colors were so bright that I didn't use them.In fact I bought a lot of materials! But the delivery didn't arrive before class. I plan to collect and try more methods in my work on the Book of Influences. For example, different materials show different feelings and atmosphere.

There are two ways I like the most today. 1) I brush the background to build the silhouette, and add some lines to show details.

To be honest, I am not very good at trying to paint with different materials. On the one hand, I don't know much about the materials, and on the other hand I'm always afraid that I won't do a good enough job. During today's process, it became clear to me that I was also worried about this. At first I was very restrained and at most I only tried carbon paper because I wanted to relax myself by drawing blindly, and later I tried charcoal strips, but I still didn't have a big breakthrough in my thinking.

During the break in the middle of the session I saw the work of the other students and they were really good at working with a variety of materials, so at the beginning of the second half I was thinking, how am I going to draw with the limited materials I have? Perhaps I could try more than just painting, so I then tried to make a very simple pop-up. I also thought about how the same materials could be used in different ways, so I tried a pencil drawing by one line. By the end of the course, I felt that I had completely let myself go.

From the initial restraint to the final spontaneity is the biggest gain of my session today.

I promise this is the craziest live drawing I've ever done XD! Using different combinations of materials that I‘ve never tried before, I gradually set up feeling of observing people and learned how to use proper materials to describe their impression on me.
At the beginning, I felt quite conservative that I still just used a traditional way to make a quick sketch. However, I knew that it was not enough and my purpose of this module is trying to explore as much as I can to break my limits on painting. So, I became more brave in the following practices, picking 2-3 kinds of materials to construct the figures. I was very surprised that I enjoyed using oil pastels and color pencils, also sometimes collage to create my work.
Personally, I think today's class is really meaningful to me because it helps me to build a rudimentary experiment on how to express my thoughts with various materials. I hope there will be more interesting class like this :)

I used pencils, pastels, acrylics and collage to paint my classmates. Through this workshop I practised the skill of combining a variety of materials in a short period of time, I had to quickly group colours, shapes and then think about what parts needed to be used. It was a fun and rewarding class!

I love the texture of this ink. It can be thick and light, can be tense and soft. I would like to use this to strengthen the context and also charcoal adds something wild sense to the pictures. Some of the models are my friends and I want to use black line and color to demonstrate their personalities. The most interesting part of painting is doing whatever I want. I also want my painting like wind breeze. Both gentle and wild exists.

K2208969
