I would first introduce an open discussion and have all the student participate and share an example of what success criteria is. Then I'd work with the class to narrow down to 3-5 that we would pick to work with as a class. We would then work to break each one down one at a time in steps.

Involve the students in creating a rubric that addresses the main components of the lesson. Students will decide what are the elements that should be evaluated the most. After, we would thoroughly discuss the grading system so they are aware of what is being asked of them. Including them in this process will guarantee understanding of the purpose of the assignment and provide opportunity for growth.

In an open discussion have students decide what needs to be evaluated most, by using samples of work. Have students identify the weakest to the strongest samples to gather a starting point for a rubric.

creating a rubric with the students will allow them to understand your expectations as well as have questions answered. It's also better to practice for the teacher to think about their students' needs when creating a rubric with them. Assigning a random rubric might create confusion or have much higher standards than what the students could be used to.

In order to find out the level of comprehension, I would ask open-ended questions about the assignment. After figuring out their level of understanding, together we would create the guidelines and expectations for the assignment.

I would have a discussion with my students to gauge their understanding of rubrics and expectations, which will then lead into what they think are success criteria for a specific learning goal. Throughout the discussion, I will talk about growth mindset and taking responsibility of our own learning. As we continue the discussion, I will write down the expectations and success criteria for reference so that they can monitor and self-assess.

Having these rubrics created allows for the students to see what the learning outcomes are, shown clearly and easily understandable. It also lets them track where their learning currently is and learn accordingly.

After showing examples of rubrics and discussing why they are helpful, students will work together with guidance from the teacher to create a list of learning targets they are expected to show in the assignment. As a whole class, we will choose 3-5 learning targets and how to show mastery of them, to create the rubric for that assignment. This will help the students understand why rubrics are used and how they can be a helpful resource to refer to when completing an assignment to ensure all expectations are being met.

Involving the students in creating a writing rubric also helps them focus on their own writing. Knowing how to earn the M on their rubric will help them become better editors, better in articulating their thoughts, and more organized writers.

By involving my students in the construction of criteria my students will take ownership of their learning, as well as have a deeper understanding of what is expected of them during assignments. This will allow us to have discussions about expectations and clarify misunderstandings they may have before starting something. It also will allow for specific goals to be put in place that are worded in ways that align with the content standards, but are understandable and attainable for my students.

I would have an open discussion. Then create rubrics. By this way they know what their own track and their progress which will improve the growth over all. And also they know self responsibility is the key to success in a longer run.
