Step 1: Choose books that are an appropriate reading level for your child.

Use the five finger rule. Open the book to any page and ask your child to read. Put up a finger every time your child does not know a word. If you have put up more than five fingers before the end of the page, - this book is too hard for your child. Help find a book that is enjoyable!

PRO TIP: Don't have any books at home? You can use MyOn to read together! Use this PowerPoint to help find the right level to read.

Step 2: Set aside special reading time (and a special reading place).

Setting a designated reading time helps in several ways.
1.) It allows a parent to plan their day more effectively and make time for reading.
2.) It helps the child, especially reluctant readers, to think of reading as a normal scheduled daily activity.

PRO TIP: Choose the right time. Always try to find a time when your child will cooperate, when neither of you are pushing to just finish the homework. The best time might not be right after school as some play time may be needed first, and certainly just before bed is a great time! Find a time that works for you and your family.

Step 3: Sit side by side with your child.

This is not the time to iron or catch up on email. Children want to please adults and will try their best to sound knowledgeable while reading. If the assignment is to read silently, actually sit by your child and read silently at the same time (yes- grab a book, magazine, or newspaper to read. No phones). Elbow to elbow and knee to knee is the best sitting position.

PRO TIP: When you sit next to kids and give them your complete attention when reading, the message you are sending loud and clear is this: "YES, reading is THAT important ! You deserve my FULL ATTENTION BECAUSE READING IS EVERYTHING.

Kid's mind: WOAH, I GET ___"S FULL ATTENTION WHEN I"M READING??? I"M GOING TO DO THIS MORE!!!"

If reading is not your favorite, fake it till you make it. It's not about what you like. It's about reading. It's about your kid. Children copy by example (mindset included).

Asking questions helps readers monitor their comprehension and stay engaged and interested in their reading. Good readers are aware that questions help them focus on and understand what they read. Questions propel readers forward and help them understand what they read more deeply.

PRO TIP: Want to learn how to ask questions? Check out this site!
https://www.inthebook.com/en-us/blog/questions-for-parents-to-ask-when-reading/
