This story is based on herself, and discusses growing up during the 1960's and 1970's. Woodson uses poetry in her beautiful story telling piece. It is history brought up to remind readers and teach readers about how life was for African-Americans. It is about belonging and her search for a place in this world. Definitely would recommend especially for young readers who may be struggling to read. The piece brings emotions to life and can be related to in more ways than one!

The message is that we are all connected by water. The piece is lyrically delivered to each reader. The subject is important for readers to learn about, and it can be directly related to the water cycle. It is a didactic book that starts with telling readers how water is used in our everyday lives. What's great is that in then shifts to put the readers into thinking mode. Lyon's piece is poetic and engaging for young readers!

Written By: Andrew Clements
Published: 1996
Upper-Elementary Chapter Book
Frindle is definitely a book to read! The story is about a boy named Nicholas who after learning all about new words decides to create a new word. That new word is, yes you guessed it, Frindle. This word is what he uses instead of calling a pen a pen. Now, Nicholas is in the fifth grade, but his fifth grade teacher is known very well for keeping everything in line within the classroom. However, once the new word that Nicholas creates starts spreading, it spreads quickly. This book is a great read for anyone interested in humor and laughing along the way. Nicholas' parents and Mrs. Granger (his teacher) want him to put an end to the word Frindle. However, it becomes so well known and popular that it's out of Nicholas' hands. Definitely a must read for early readers, and they won't want to put the book down!

This camp is well known for super smart middle schoolers, but it is also known for something else. It is known to many as a nerd camp. Before getting accepted and on his way to camp, Gabe starts to think about whether he is a nerd or not. He then finds himself comparing himself to his step brother who is hip and fairly popular. On this journey with Gabe, he takes a trip to "Dead Mans Island", and he discovers that he can still be friends with his brother. He realizes that even though they are different, that it shouldn't be what keeps them from being friends. Definitely an interesting read, and something that early middle school kids would enjoy reading.

Written By: Michael Dorris
Published: 1996
Middle School Chapter Book
This book is one with alot of symbolism and metaphors. This book is definitely a read for seventh-eighth graders. In Sees Behind Trees we start by learning about a boy named Walnut and learn that he is trying to become a man and earn his "man hood name". We quickly learn that the requirement to earn his man-hood name comes from striking bow and arrow on the target. Walnut is near sighted, however has one ability that he learns is his strength. Even though he is near sighted, he has incredible hearing abilities. Early on in the story, we see how he uses his hearing abilities. He ends up hearing GrayFire, an old man from the village prior to shooting his target. GrayFire consistently reminds Walnut that his hearing is one of his strengths, and to not focus so much on his near sightedness. Walnut ends up receiving his man-hood name, Sees Behind Trees. Later, Sees Behind Trees takes a trip with GrayFire to the Land of Water. On the trip, GrayFire tells him a story about how he got trapped and had to cut off one of his toes. Along the way to the Land of Water, GrayFire goes missing. Now, after everything GrayFire has taught him along the way, readers wonder if Sees Behind Trees will find his way back home. Using his hearing to his advantage. There is also a turn of events that happens later after GrayFire goes missing. Definitely an adventure and interesting insgiht on reminding readers that sometimes we focus so much on disadvantages, that we miss all the great and beneficial strengths that we do have.

Written By: Holly Black
Published: 2013
Middle School Chapter Book
This story is definitely a great read! Three friends who have been in each others lives, have grown very close to one another. There family lives each have been fairly chaotic, so they've each bonded and hang out to escape their home lives. Zach, Alice, and Poppy are close friends who end up going on a real life adventure. Prior to the adventure, Zach's father destroys and gets rid of alot of his toys. This leads Zach to telling Alice and Poppy he is no longer interested in playing. Poppy doesn't want to lose Zach in their friendship, and tells him a story she knows that he wont be able to resist. The story is about a creepy doll who is a queen. Apparently Poppy has been having dreams, and learns that the queen is possessed by the soul of a dead girl named, Eleanor Kerchner. The doll doesn't want to stay at Poppy's house just like Poppy doesn't. The three friends end up taking a trip to get the Queen back home. The adventure becomes real-life when the three end up getting on a bus because the Queens home is in Ohio. They encounter or come across someone on that bus who won't really leave them alone. This leads to them getting off the bus. Then the three friends end up in a rather unfamiliar city. The journey with the three is definitely one that draws the reader in. They also take a boat, and later break into a library. It is truly a must read. The adventure that the three go on and the experiences that they share are definitely rare occurring. The questions is, will they return the queen to her home? Remember, she's possessed, and along the way she haunts them throughout.

Written By: Louis Sachar
Published: 1998
Middle School Chapter Book
This book is about a boy named Stanley. Stanley ends up getting sent to Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is a detention camp for juveniles. The title comes from what is is Stanley and the other boys and their daily activity. They are expected to dig holes in the ground every single day. When Stanley first gets to Camp Green Lake, he doesn't realize that they are all digging for a primary reason. The warden of the camp is searching for something. The story then splits into three separate stories, which we later realize are all connected. We learn what the Warden is searching for, and we learn about the curse that actually was put on Stanley's family. We learn that the camp used to be alive and rich in fruit and we learn about Kathering and Sam. Katherine a school teacher who falls in love with Sam (an onion seller). However, racism is dominant at the time, and it was illegal for a black man to kiss a white woman. The two fall in love regardless, but when the richest man in town finds out about Katherine and Sam, he is infuriated, because he wants to marry Katherine, even though she is not interested. They end up tryingti kill Sam and even burn down the school where Katherine works. The two escape on a boat but it gets destroyed, and Sam ends up dying. At this point, Katherine is angry and grieving. This leads her to killing men and kissing them on the cheek. Any man she kisses, she intends to kill. The connection to Stanleys family, was that Katherine robbed Stanleys great grandfather, and buries the treasure. Before it is revealed where the treasure is, Katherine ends up dying. As we continue reading, we learn about how that connection ties back into Camp Green Lake, and Stanleys family.

Written By: Beverly Cleary
Published:
Upper-Elementary Chapter Book
One of my favorite books! I have been into Berverly Cleary's books! This is the first and it is about two sisters. Beezus is the older sister and Ramona is her little sister with a wild and expressive, imaginative side. We get to see how Beezus struggles to show love towards Ramona. However, we get to then see how over time she realizes that Ramona is unique and that is something she aspire to be as well. Specifically related to her imagination! Definitely enjoyed reading this book, because it is all about sisterhood. The adventure the two take is insightful and one that you wouldn't want to miss out on!
