There's so much more meaning in photographs than meets the eye if you utilize visual literacy techniques to evaluate the photo. Considering photo composition, angle, lightening and other factors often tell a story or moment.

Visual literacy is in the eye of the viewer and there is no right or wrong interpretation.

Similar to Media literacy, which I've encountered frequently since I'm online often, Visual literacy is about understanding and being able to interpret images in the same way we read and analyze words. It helps us recognize symbolisms, emotions, and meanings behind visuals, helping us to see stories in images.

By just glancing at a photo, you can't tell much, but if you take the time to really look at the shapes and textures, all the details of a photo, you're able to uncover a story within. By using signs and symbols when looking at a photo, you can let your mind wander and create a story within the photo, which I think is very cool.

Visual literacy is what someone makes it. They can be the same view but different interpretations of how someone might see it. It's also important to continue to learn, so we can see what history itself wanted us to experience.

You do need to take the time to really look at the images to discover all the imagery, items being used and the positioning of the subjects. These in itself tells the story and then you can add any dramatic background that could be contributed from Mother Nature to help solidify the story the photographer is conveying. Everything is subjective and each interpretation is unique.

One thing I learned about visual literacy is there really is no right or wrong way to go about it. It is individual per person and solely depends on what you feel instead of what you see in a photo I think when you combine the two that’s what helps you come up with visual literacy.
