Este dia é festejado com exposições por todo o país, em locais pertencentes à Rede Portuguesa de Arquivos.
O Dia Internacional dos Arquivos foi instituído pela Assembleia Geral do CIA – Conselho Internacional de Arquivos, realizada no Québec, em Novembro de 2007. Foi escolhida esta data, por ter sido precisamente a 9 de Junho de 1948, que a UNESCO criou aquele Conselho.
