For the 11th graders, we discussed various ways of addressing learning loss. Our observation was that the students who need intervention the most are the ones who have been least likely to participate. The REAL issue appears NOT to be, "What can we do to address learning loss," because we're doing those things. The issue appears to be, "What can we do to encourage, or ensure, that the students who need remediation the most successfully participate in the remediation that we offer?" The issue appears to be more one of administrative incentive structures than faculty curriculum techniques. Grading students on their quality of participation in such remediation doesn't appear to be an effective incentive, since the low-performing students don't seem to be sufficiently incentivized by receiving low scores on graded implementation of remedial lessons. They just take the "D" or "F" on the assignment and continue not to effectively participate.

Build real, meaningful relationships with students and the community; maintain communication for updates & advice.

We need to look at our practices as the adults. Is our grading policy working? Are our instructional practices working? If not, try something different!!! We need to ask each other what we're doing. We need to stop pressing ahead like we're in normal times -- even well-performing kids are losing motivation and wondering what's the point of working & trying to build towards a future.

We should NOT be grading formative work harshly. Maybe try grading it on a credit/no credit basis based on participation. But you have to catch the kids to get them to participate!

Grade based on the students' current grade level standards for summative assessments, NOT what they "should have learned" before.

Slow down!! There is no way we'll be able to get through what we would pre-COVID, and we likely moved too fast then! The kids are already behind, and more we move like steam-rollers, the more behind they'll get.

Finally, make sure lessons are meaningful and make sure every period has something of value. No busy-work; the kids see right through it.
