Lorazepam slows down electrical activity in the brain. It binds to the GABA receptors, which increases GABA levels (which relieves anxiety).
If Lorazepam is taken for multiple days/weeks the brain will get used to this activity and become hyperactive without it. People can come dependent on Lorazapam very easily, many are unable to function without it, even if they have only taken it for a couple of weeks.

Dosing depends on the persons weight and reaction to their first dose. Average dose is 1 to 10 mg/day, 0.5-2 mg/dose, which can cause mild side-effects (listed in "effects" section). It is usually orally ingested in the form of a pill.
Taking more than 10 mg/day will intensify side-effects and can cause seizures, kidney failure, internal bleeding, and death.

Flumazenil blocks the effects of Lorazepam and is usually given for an overdose. It doesn't reverse the affects, but stops things from getting worse. Many patients get charcoal agents to induce vomiting. The patient gets an IV to stay hydrated with fluids. Sometimes a ventilator is needed (depending on the severity of the overdose).
