Pretend your friend just told you that Obama's hip hop celebrity barbecue failed to create jobs. You ask him where he heard that, and he says it’s a fact because it was on FOX’s website in the "Fox Nation" section. Use all of your knowledge about media bias to explain to your friend how those facts may have been influenced by FOX and that particular author/reporter’s bias. Also, enlighten your friend on the many different ways you can detect a news website’s bias and agenda. by Tess Layer

Some of their focus is on crime cases from the past. They also focus on political events. They are also known for starting many controversies, allegations and firings. Because Fox News is a Pro-republican channel this means all their news coverage on Obama will most likely be very biased and against him. Fox News is wanting the people reading to think he is a bad person or has done something bad so the reader will have the same mind set and beliefs they are persuading them to become a Republican or side with them/wanting people to think badly about Obama.

In this case, FOX News has a tendency to be angled towards the "right side" of the American political system, which is generally more Republican. FOX often ignores the main issue and focuses on what they want their readers to see in modern-day politics. Therefore FOX news is not the most credible site to get your news from, or to let shape your opinion. If you wanted to check if a piece of news from a very politically corrupted cite like FOX is true try using other news organizations to see if what their reports somewhat align, this could help you see more clearly what is going on.

FOX news, a popular and common site can definitely be bias at some points. If one were to compare FOX's information to another outlets, everything might not match perfectly.

FOX News tends to have a right/conservative bias. They tend to report facts in ways that go in favor of the Republicans and go against the Democrats. Obama is from the Democratic party, so FOX News would be eager to point out and exaggerate things that go against Obama and the Democratic party. There are a few ways in which you can detect a news website's bias or agenda. One of the ways you can detect it is by looking at their choice of words and who they support in the article. A good example is a website/article that covers the presidential debate. If they describe the Democratic candidate in a better way than the Republican candidate, you can tell that they have a left/liberal bias, and vice versa. One other good way to detect a bias on a news website is to look at the stories that they put on the website. If the website only publishes stories that relate to one subject, such as stories in favor of the Republican party, you can tell that they have a bias in the stories they publish.

Most of the articles on that site are going to be againts democrats. Obama is a democrat, so FOX news would tend to over-exaggerate the situation to try and make others think negatively about him and his actions. You can't assume everything you read is a fact. You have to review things closely and see if the story is based on facts or if it is just someone's opinion. You can identify bias in the media by considering who the sources are and who's point of view the story is told from. Because of this, they are usually known for using strong, bold, loaded words which exaggerates a topic from what it really is. Since they are known for being more towards the extreme side of conservatism and for their exaggeration, I'd say that Fox isn't being entirely truthful and is just using these bold assumptions for more reads, which then leads to more people supporting this idea, that's their agenda. If you compare bias articles like these to non-bias articles, you'd be able to tell a difference and that could help you decipher what is factual and what isn't. Going on a website such as Media Bias/Fact Check could help as well, that's the website I used to back up my information.

Something being on a news website doesn't prove that it will be 100% accurate at most times. FOX news is one of the many news that people like to read/hear from but it has its mistakes at times. This website isn't always trustworthy. They like to add extra words that don't need to be on a topic, title, or article. This website is more towards being more Right-Biased and most of the things that are published from the website are failed to be factual and are soon retracted because of the amount of misleading information that has taken place in the article/news. The author that wrote that might have just wanted to attract many readers. To see if it's false or not, you can just go to a different news website and see if there might be anything similar to that news. Also, you can go to www.mediabiasfactcheck.com and check if Fox is trustworthy. On the media bias website, it says that the factual reporting is mixed which isn't totally good since that means that the website is using more false information/opinions and maybe some facts. NBC News seems to be a better website to trust since it has a more Left-Centered bias and has a high factual reporting due to proper sourcing.

Just make sure you're checking many different sources to make sure that the article you're reading doesn't have a bias, especially if the story seems strange or hard to believe. It is almost impossible for a writer to have absolutely no bias, they're only human. Even if they don't have an agenda, (trying to influence your thoughts by exaggerating the truth, or not telling the whole truth,) they probably still have an opinion that can sometimes bleed into their writing. Checking for bias can lead you to be more informed about issues like Obama's hip hop celebrity barbecue.

Just because you see something on a news site, that does not mean that it's absolutely a fact. Most news sites are biased and are trying to get you to think something. Fox is biased towards the Republican party, and Obama is democratic. Because of that, Fox likely has a bias against Obama. Also, Fox often publishes non-factual stories with no sources. The best way to keep yourself informed is to look at various news sources with different biases and agendas so that you get all sides of the story.

I would tell him that not everyone states the truth when it comes to news or social media because what they are really looking for, is views, and possibly likes. Especially for popular websites like FOX, they tend to state their own opinion on things by taking sides, which leads to views, which is what everyone wants. One way that I would tell my friend to detect if there is any bias or an agenda in the writing, is to look for any type of clue words that doesn't fully confirm anything, such as "I think," or "It is expected," or even "It is hoped for." But, if it does contain words that indicate that it could be facts, then try and go to different websites, or the writer's source to see if there is any difference between the two. And finally, I'd tell him to look to see if it doesn't change the subject by moving onto something else. Sometimes, news websites make their articles so entertaining, that you don't notice the change of subject because they do it very smoothly and sneakily, which again, can lead to opinions and media bias.

Some graphics and videos also could be coming from a completely different topic. They just want to capture your emotions and make you willingly stay on the website. Maybe it failed to create jobs but something else happened instead that did later. There are websites that help or you can use key works like if a person 'failed' to do something or 'mistake' and see what side that person is. It is more likely that they say these key words against the opposite side. Going back to looking at other sources you can see if another source has a similar story but if you know they are favoring one side and they said it was great, that shows the other site has a certain bias.

Most news stations are bias in a subtle way. They want there viewers believe in what they want. But there of course can be bias in a news station. But I would tell him/her to look into it more. One way she can research the subject/situation is to look at other websites and other news stations and see if they talked about it or has anything about it. And compare both articles and if they are the same, then the situation is true. But if one is leaning toward one side and one is leaning toward the other, there could be bias into play. So, he/she should decide what to believe because everyone is different.

Since FOX NEWS sometimes talks about facts and other times about their own bias opinion, you don't know if what they are saying is true.
