Maggie, a deeply traumatized and dejected girl, is willing to part ways with the objects that mean the most to her. This moment is one of positivity and defined by a beautiful bond between the two women.

Throughout their lives, Dee had walked all over them, looking down on their intelligence, Maggie’s scars, and their ways of life. However, in this story, their mother nurtures and helps to heal Maggie by preventing Dee from taking advantage of her again. The diction in the story, when their mother hugs Maggie, shows the nurturing that the mother is able to provide for Maggie that offers some comfort to the reader.

Though Dee wants to display them, to seemingly elevate them to the realm of art, the objects actually are most valuable and dear when used daily. This demonstrates that just because an object is used everyday, does not mean that it is not appreciated daily, and elevated in the best way possible each and every day.

Following this idea, while the bond between Maggie and her mother is touching, it also is a moment of celebration and assertion.
