Sadie Crashes into a Jewelry Store

Sadie(Ellery's Mom) was on drugs while she crashed into a Jewelry store, which sent her into rehab. This is the reason Ellery and her brother Ezra are moving in with their Grandma all the way from California to Vermont. Character traits to go with Ellery's response to moving across the country are very unresponsive, she is very carefree and emotionless during the move. I think this is because she doesn't have a strong mother daughter bond with Sadie and she feels it won't affect her if she doesn't have to she Sadie again. Evidence to support this is, "There That’s how you navigate an awkward conversation. No need to lead with Sorry your mom drove into a jewelry store while she was high on opioids and had t go to rehab for four months. Just acknowledge the elephant in the room, sidestep, and segue into smoother conversational waters" This quote makes it obvious that it isn't really a sore subject for Ellery she just feels it is awkward to talk about it.

Ellery and Ezra move to Echo Ridge

Once Ellery and her brother Ezra get to Echo Ridge Ellery feels a little uneasy. Considering this is where her aunt Shara disappeared when she was her age. The tone the author wants to give off about Echo Ridge is a unsettling feeling where you never know what secret lies around the corner waiting to be discovered. Evidence to support this is, “Sadie left Echo Ridge when she was eighteen, and she’s only been back twice…And the second time was five years ago, for Melanie’s teenage daughter’s funeral…I was transfixed by the story of Lacey Kilduff, the beautiful blond homecoming queen from my mother’s hometown found strangled in a a Halloween theme park.” This shows even before Ellery got to Echo Ridge there is already a mystery murder and some secrets lying around.

Ellery and Ezra are driving home they find what was one of their future teachers dead in the road

Just as Ellery and Ezra pass the Welcome to Echo Ridge sign, they see a dead body in the middle of the road. They were shocked, they have not even been in Echo Ridge for over an hour, Ellery later finds out that it would have been one of her future teachers at her new high school. The conflict shows that right when Ellery and her brother get to Echo Ridge there is already a murder on the loose. Evidence to support this is, “We exchange confused glances and follow suit. The ground is covered with puddles of half melted hail, and I pick my way around my grandmother. Nana is standing in front of Melanie's car,her gaze fixed on the patch of road bathed in the headlights. And on the still figure lying right in the middle of it. Covered in blood, with his neck bent at a horribly wrong angle and his eyes wide open, staring at nothing.” This quote states that nobody was prepared to see what they saw and now they have to worry about what happened to the man in the road.

Ellery Gets Nominated for Homecoming Court

Once Ellery gets situated into her new school and somewhat makes friend with the popular girls. After being there for only a couple of weeks she made her way onto the homecoming court. At first she thinks it is a mistake but later she realises it was no accident. Soon after that threats are being made to the people on the court by an anonymous person. This is relates to the theme because you never know who is on your side and what people could be doing, planning or saying about you behind your back. Evidence to support this is, "Ezra snorts.' El, we’ve been here three weeks. So far we’ve reported a dead body, gotten jobs at a murder site, and been targeted by a homecoming stalker.” This relates to the theme because Ellery and Ezra have only been in Echo ridge for a couple of weeks and haven't made any emoninmes or done anything wrong yet all of these things are still happening to Ellery.

Malcolm Finds Shrine on Lacey’s Tombstone

As Malcolm was putting flowers on Laceys grave he stumbled across graffiti in the graveyard. There is creepy dolls in homecoming dresses and on the wall in red paint it reads "I'm Back Pick Your Queen, Echo Ridge Happy Homecoming." The authors uses mood to get a emotional response from the reader. She does this by introducing one of the first Homecoming threats by the anonymous person. Evidence to support this is, "A garish, red-spattered corsage decorates a grave next to the mausoleum and my stomach twists when I recognize this section of the cemetery. I stood almost exactly where I'm standing now when Lacey was buried." This piece of evidence supports the mood because it makes the reader want to find out who is doing the threats and what they want to get out of them.

Ellery Finds the Receipt That Proves Caitlin and Brooke Killed the Teacher

After Ellery's shift at work she saw brooke trying to get into the locked office all Brooke said is that she needed to get something from inside the office. But she needed it so badly that she was trying to pick the lock to get in. Later Ellery found out what Brook was trying to get and it was the receipt from an auto shop that got caitlin's car repainted and a dent was fixed. Later Ellery found out that she did all that because it was actually Caitlin and Brooke who hit the teacher when Ellery first came to town. The author uses first person point of view in this scene, evidence to support this is,"The four of us sit in a circle around the pile and start sifting though its contents. My pulse has slowed since I left the House of Horrors, but it;s still jumping." The reader can tell this is first person point of view because Ellery uses words like "My" and ''Us" this makes the reader like they are in the story themselves listing to the conversation.

Brooke Goes Missing

After Elley's and Brooke's shift at Fright Farms they is a staff party, Brooke isn't feeling well after the party so Malcolm who was also there takes her home. Brooke starts walking towards her house so Malcolm starts to head home. The next morning Elley's and Malcolms phones are blowing up because apparently Brooke never got insider her house and she is missing. A couple of days later she is found dead. This even relates to the issue because of the issues in this story is death. Evidence to support this is, "“The small town was already on edge after a series of vandalism incidents beginning in early september. Buildings and signs were defaced with messages written as though they were from Lacey Kilduff’s killer. The anonymous threats promised another attack on one the the girls elected to homecoming court a short list that included Brooke Bennett.” This evidence proves that one of the main issues was death and murder.
