Impact on Education System

Nel Noddings has been able to demonstrate the significance of caring and relationship both as an educational goal and as a fundamental aspect of education. She argues that education from the care perspective has four key components: modelling, dialogue, practice and confirmation.
-- Modeling is important for educators to do in the classroom in order to show through their behavior what it means to care. "We do not merely tell them to care and give them texts to read on the subject, we demonstrate our caring in our relationships with them," (Nel Noddings).
-- Dialogue's intent is to engage people in discussions about caring. Talking direcly about our caring can help individuals critique their own relationships and practice in the classroom.
-- Practice implies experiences in which we immerse ourselves tend to produce a 'mentality.' "If we want to produce people who will care for another, then it makes sense to give students practice in caring and reflection on that practice," (Nel Noddings).
-- Confirmation involves trust and continuity. It sets caring apart from other approaches to moral education. When we confirm someone, we identify a better self and encourage its development.

One criticism of Noddings' ethic of care is that it advocates little importance to caring for oneself, except as a means to provide further care for others. For example, the teacher-student relationship could be jeopardized because the educator might not engage in self-care; instead devote all their energy into meeting only their students' needs.
Jean Grimshaw, a feminist and philosopher, argues the importance of distance between the individuals. She states, "Care and understanding require distance needed in order not to see the other as a projection of the self." Distance between the self and individual that is being cared for needs to exist in order to keep the personal care of both individuals in mind.
