Before the COVID19 pandemic, this space was a communal, social space. It houses the on campus coffee shop, Uncommon Grounds, as well as the bookstore and student mailboxes. Therefore, the space is one that students use to run errands but also contains couches, tables, and chairs that make it a comfortable space to hang out. However, as opposed to other communal spaces like libraries, students socialize or do group work in the Campus Center as it is not a quiet space. When I conducted my ethnography in this space during the COVID19 pandemic, the energy of the space had shifted. In a time where students are usually isolated to their individual rooms, the Campus Center provides a space to be with others while still being productive. It serves many of the same purposes it did before the pandemic but the volume and energy level was much lower. As a student at Bryn Mawr, my prior utilization and understanding of the space greatly influenced my ethnographic approach and analysis. The nature of the pandemic made it difficult to do ethnographic research as students are isolated to individual spaces.
