Unit 1: When Worlds Meet
| Unit Compelling Question
What happens when different worlds meet?

| Project Summary
Students will take on the role of a history blogger by summarizing what happened when the worlds of North America, West Africa, and Western Europe met as a result of colonization. Students will compose an informative blog post that answers the Compelling Question: What happens when different worlds collide? The blog post can be created on the approved digital platform of choice and must include a title, by line, clear claim, evidence from sources, and reasoning. At the end of each module, students will reflect on how they might use the information and evidence from that module to create their blog post. Students may be given the opportunity to post their final product on a platform of the teacher’s choice to allow classmates to leave comments and questions in response to each blog post (via Google Classroom, padlet, Flipgrid, etc.) Additionally, students may be given the opportunity to localize their learning by applying the compelling question to a local, modern example of different groups meeting and including this information in the final blog post.

When worlds collide cultures mix and cross paths. There were people that came from Europe and Africa and that got enslaved by the rich and white people of america. The american gifted and traded slaves. Also in America they would auction off slaves to people. When the slaves came from Europe they came on boats or slave boats. This proves there were people who came from Europe and africa.

`People of color got enslaved by the white people. The slavery ships came across the seas and ocean. They got shipped from Africa and europe. This shows that people of color got enslaved when they got off the ships. When they got to America the rich made them work in the fields.

White people enslaved Africans and Europeans. The slaves get auctioned to work in the fields and for people. A Lot of the slaves tried to run away but if they got caught they got killed. For example in the slavery boats 3 people jumped off and they left them there to die. This shows people got auctioned off and if they ran away they got killed.

When worlds collide or meet bad and good decisions are made that might benefit us or have a negative impact. So when North America, Africa, and Europe met Colonialism happened which is the “practice of acquiring full or partial control over another country.” As Well as so much more change. Spain, Portugal, France, Dutch, and The British all wanted to establish colonies around the world. Slavery impacted the world deeply and changed it immensely.

Bad and good things will happen like colonialism will happen, slavery, and lots more like chattel slavery. In lesson 6 we learned about chattel slavery post collision. As Well as how all 13 colonies were built after the worlds collided. Before the worlds collided no one knew about chattel slavery there was only regular slavery. Not all 13 colonies were built either.

Things that happened after they collided were colonialism, slavery, chattel slavery, and after they met all 13 colonies were built. In lesson 6 it tells us that in 1619 the first 20 Americans brought to Virginia were traded as indentured servants. In 1732 all 13 colonies were established. Before they met no one knew about chattel slavery. Laws were made to reinforce their ideas of “Black” and “White.”

All people in America have come from different parts of the world. For instance, people come from continents like Europe, Africa, and even other areas in North America. In the lesson activities, they focused on what Europe, Africa, and North America were like before and after a collision. Some claim that the collision helped spread cultures and was very beneficial; however, there were also some dark parts to it as well. When worlds collide, discrimination or peace could happen because the Europeans were discriminative towards Africans and the Native American tribes were able to be at peace with the Dutch.

Even though there were benefits to the collision of multiple worlds, there were some bad parts to it too. For example, lesson 8 shows when Africans were sent to European colonies for work, they began getting belittled by the Europeans. They started becoming their slaves and losing all their rights which began causing rebellions. Many people began to get mistreated and had to go through a lot of abuse just because of how they looked. A lot of discrimination took place after the Europeans collided with the Africans. In conclusion, many issues that we still face today were due to the slavery that took place in the colonies.

Although there was inequality that took place, there was also peace between some worlds. For example, lesson 6 shows when the Haudenosaunee and Dutch worlds ran into each other, they worked together to see how they could live together in harmony. This way of communication created the Covenant Chain treaty which gave them both the opportunity to continue living with their customs. It was like saying that each nation respected the other and left each other alone. With communication, there was a way where both sides could agree to respect each other’s customs without any wars starting. There could be peace between the two worlds, and maybe even share some of each other’s customs.

Many things and reactions can happen when something new is presented to a group of people. Like how agreements and inequality can happen between two nations that do not know anything about each other. For example, people who came from Africa to the colonies were not treated fairly by others. In addition, the Haudenosaunee and the Dutch created an agreement to not interfere with each other’s way of living. As a result of the collision, issues that are still faced today can be dated back to those times.

When two worlds meet there are benefits and negatives between the two.

For instance the Empire of Mali. The king Mansa Musa developed knowledge and culture and built buildings. But on the bad side the resources were taxed and enslaved more than 12 thousand people and almost destroyed the Egyptian economy. It helps you by telling the benefits and negatives between the two worlds by showing or telling you the goods and bad stuff happens.

In the 1500's the Haudenosaunee united five tribes with a peacemaker. Together they created a government and a peace belt and a grand council. But the Americans had slavery with Africans and even took them from Africa.

The Natives had peace with each other and grew. Also the empire of Mali handed out gold and grew. But the Negatives are Egypt's economy was destroyed. Also Americans put slaves into Africa. That is what happens when you two worlds meet.

Native Americas Prior To The Collision - Their Ways of Life

The Native people of North America got along due to them setting boundaries with one another. Each individual native tribe had their own land and river sides. People who did not respect the boundaries would start wars with each other till one is gone. Despite their differences they lived in peace with one other. With this evidence it shows that Native Americas got along and rarely had miscommunication with each other.

The indigenous people of North America were the first people in America. Long before the collision Native American thrived with the nature and wildlife in their territory. All the Native tribes lived autonomously, with this each individual tribe lived differently in different ways. The Native Americans also had a method for farming called “Three sisters farming”. Which was practiced for growing crops together. With this evidence it can show how people before the collision lived life, and how much has changed after the meeting of worlds. The Native people of North America used the land for life. They saw it as home.

The Native Americans lived a peaceful and wonderful life with traditions, roles in which everyone followed, and, more. The roles were put in place for the success of the whole tribe. Like trading, hunting, and caretaking. Through rituals, dances, and songs the Native celebrated the connection of humans and nature. Neighboring indigenous people work together to make trading networks, to help exchange resources and goods. With this it can show that Native Nations lived happy lives prior to the collision.

I believe that when North America, Africa, and Europe collide, different cultures, ideas, religion, leaders and people that might mix, change or team up and respect each other's way of life.

I believe that when North America, Africa, and Europe collide, different cultures, ideas, religions, leaders and people that might mix, change or team up and respect each other's way of life. They all have their own ideas so if they mix they could take the best of both and make something better. They might just work together and learn from each other. Before the collision they were all more successful when they met each other.

All of them want to survive, so if they work together they will make everything easier for each other. For example, North America prior to the collision had trade networks where they got new resources and worked together. The article states “neighboring nations worked together to develop trade networks. This helped with the exchange of goods and resources.” It also states “the hopi tribe of what is now Arizona traded turquoise and other valuable stones.” This shows that they can team up and work together.

I believe that when North America, Africa and Europe collide different cultures, ideas, beliefs and people that might mix, change, team up, and respect each other's way of life. They all have their own ways of life so when they meet each other they might change or combine each other's culture. For example in lesson 8, The Guswenta belt shows two purple lines with a white background. The purple represents boats that never cross, symbolizing that they won’t fight and that they are side by side and would respect each other. I believe this is involved because the Dutch and Haudenosaunee aren’t fighting, instead they are at peace with each other. Another example is source 7 # 7, they used rice to pressure their culture after being forced to be slaves, they would grow rice, which led to rice being important for north america. That proves that the African culture mixed with North American culture and became important. This all proves that their ways of life mixed and changed after collision.

When worlds meet, it usually results in war, people rebelling, treaties, and slavery. This is how North America, Europe, and Africa were formed. As for before these 3 worlds meet, they all were very different and smart. They each had different religions and ways of living. All of them had different types of religions, languages, ideas, and many more. All of this changed when these three worlds collided.

The colonies of North America, Europe, and Africa were formed by war, treaties, people rebelling, and slavery. During lesson eight, in “The Covenant Chain and the Guswenta Belt,” in order to prevent a war, they made a treaty. This treaty made sure that no war happened and each colony kept to themselves. If the treaty was not made, there would have been an all-out war. Another way these countries were formed was by slavery. The slaves would either capture important people which caused chaos. Or they would burn things and kill people which would cause empires to slowly fall.

All of this evidence ties together to show what usually happens when worlds collide. It shows that it will usually end up in war, a treaty, rebellion, or slavery. That is what happens when two or many worlds collide.

-Mason

The argument I'm trying to make is what happens when worlds meet is that they will have different religions, languages, and cultures. Something that can happen when worlds meet is some can have positive and negative changes to their tribe, religion, and culture. My evidence is in source 1 lesson 3 which states that strong military leaders from Northern Africa conquered and forced the people of Ghana to convert to Islam would be shown as a negative change because the people of Ghana were forced to convert to Islam. Mansa Musa developed the sit of Timbuktu as a central city for knowledge and culture which can be a positive change because anyone can learn more about their culture. How the worlds of North America, Africa, and Europe are organized is that everyone is different in their own way and no one is the same, most of the places had different rights and some had the same, but one thing they did have in common where the slaves because the slave did everything for everyone because they had no chose but to follow the law. For slavery There were different kinds there was chattel slavery and many more, Chattel slavery meant property, and chattel slavery meant that enslaved people were not treated like humans at all and didn’t have rights at all. In Europe they had a powerful government that made laws to govern Virginia, in Northern America, they were ruled by 5 different tribes who signed treaties to keep two tribes at peace and never cross. I have collected this evidence from all of the articles I have read shows me that in Europe they had a powerful government that made laws to govern Virginia, in Northern America, they were ruled by 5 different tribes who signed treaties to keep two tribes at peace and never cross, and finally in West Africa they had a powerful Empire. You can also take a look at the Ghana Empire, in the article you can read about the Sonike people. These articles talk about what they did to make themselves better. To fully answer the question of what happens when worlds meet there are a lot of things that can happen when different worlds collide including people going to war to try to have people on top and some on the bottom like a social ranking, or so that the people at the bottom could try and fight their way up to the top, but in the end, they would all just ruin the peace by going to war.
