Some slave owners allowed hunting, gathering, bartering, and gardening so that slaves had enough food to keep them healthy until the next time they were fed their meal from their master.

Due to slave owners having to pay for costs of tobacco processing fewer slaves were bought making it harder on men and women to find spouses or people to have children with.

Men, women, and children were forced to work in the fields due to the high growth of tobacco.

Women also helped with laundry, gardening, cooking, and taking care of the children.

Men helped with repair work on the farms along with hanging clothes and packing tobacco.

Depending on the master, some slaves were allowed to go to other plantations a few times a week to see family members or spouses. Other masters completely separated families, even sending some states away from each other.
