Most animals are social for a lot of things but most are social because they have increased survival and reproduction chances. For example, fish school together to look bigger than a predator to scare them off and if a predator still attacks to have a chance to escape more easily. They communicate to each other to find food as well so they can all survive. Once they find food they become a shoal and feed. They can also find mates in schooling fish and be able to reproduce more easily. With so many eggs that female fish produce and with such a large group of fish there is a much higher chance the eggs will be fertilized.

Fish adapted to swim in schools to deter predators, improve foraging, and swim more efficiently. The way this adaptation formed was because of a special organ called the lateral line on a fishes body that is able to sense vibrations in water and allows them to make precise movements with their school. As more generations passed, this organ would become more precise and effective allowing much more fish to school together making them much less likely to be eaten by predators.

I think the way fish school is very smart and energy efficient way to deter predators and find food. Why try to find food alone and swim alone when you can group together with other fish to find food easier and even find mates easier? Fish that school are much less likely to be eaten as well giving them more reason to school instead of going alone.
