Lois Lowry wrote a very good book called The Giver. It has a very interesting plot. First, Jonas and his friends live a normal life, until the ceremony of twelve. They work at their volunteer hours, and play under the very strict rules in the community. Some text evidence for this is, “Jonas rode his bike at a leisurely pace, glancing at the bike ports to see if he could spot Asher’s. He didn’t often do his volunteer hours with his friend because Asher frequently fooled around and made serious work a little difficult.” (26) Next, Jonas gets picked to be the Receiver, and he meets the Giver. Some text evidence for this is, “‘Jonas has been selected to be our new Receiver of memory.’” (60) So Jonas works for the Giver for about a year. Sometimes the Giver is in too much pain to do much, but often when he is in pain, he transfers some to Jonas. Jonas eventually decides to flee the city and go to the outside world.

- Marissa

The book, The Giver, has a utopian world. As the book begins, Lois Lowry untangles the unique community of the main character Jonas. On top of the many rules they have, rituals and ceremonies are main part of their culture. At Jonas’ ceremony of twelve, he gets selected to be the receiver of memory(60). Soon enough Jonas starts training, getting the feeling of pain never experienced before. Although he and his community are being provided with everything necessary, he starts thinking differently about everything. He gets his own perspective on the community and wants change. Finally, Jonas soon learns what release really turns out to be, which completely changes everything he has thought about the world he lives in.

They also bought a nursery for their children The nursery turns your thoughts into images and smells and sensations. When the parents found out that the children thought of a blazing hot African veldt they knew something was wrong. They called a psychologist to determine what they should do. He determines that this is unhealthy and suggests the parents should turn off the nursery. The problem is, the children love the nursery more than their parents and end up killing them to make sure the nursery stays on. The ironic part is, they killed them with the lions from the African veldt inside the nursery.

The Giver is a novel about a 11 year old boy named Jonas who lives in a superior community. No one who lives there has ever experienced pain, but they have never experienced true happiness either. On Jonas’ twelfth birthday, all of that changes. Jonas is selected to become “The Receiver of Memories.” He then meets the person who will transmit the memories to him, The Giver. The Giver is a kind old man who carries all the memories of the world “back and back and back (95).” The man gives Jonas a huge variety of memories, from gruesome pain to wonderful rainbows. Jonas and the Giver agree that everyone needs to feel these memories, but the only way to do this is to travel to Elsewhere. If Jonas is able to accomplish this, all of the memories he holds will be released to everyone. Jonas decides to take this journey with his little brother Gabriel, but what will become of them is uncertain.

“The Giver”, written by Lois Lowry is a book that takes place in the future and where everything is the same. There was a lot of other stuff that they changed in order for everything to be kept the same. They got rid of memories for everybody except for the Receiver who keeps them all, even though memories are very important. The theme is the importance of memory because memories are very important, even if they cause pain. The book was very suspenseful throughout the book because from the selection of becoming the Receiver and the escaping, the author made us wait a lot to see what would happen to Jonas and made it all more dramatic.

He sees Elsewhere, which is the same thing as seeing color. But it can also be hearing Elsewhere, music, or (I’m just guessing) feeling Elsewhere. His world was supposed to be a utopia, but he sees the difference, and eventually realizes that his world is a dystopia. He and his trainer alone hold the memories of war, pain, suffering, and love. They are the only ones who can unite the community and change it to become whole again.
